LeBron James told reporters after a game this week that he intends to play for as long as he believes that he can still contend for an NBA Championship. The press conference took place after a 112-98 defeat for the Lakers at the hands of the Miami Heat.

“I know as long as my mind stays in it, I can play at this level for a minute,” James said. “Now, that’s up to my mind. My body is going to be OK because if my mind is into it, I will make sure my body is taken care of and I’ll continue to put in the work.”

James’ optimistic outlook about his limited NBA future has been reinforced by his play in recent weeks. Though the Lakers have continued to struggle and are now 14-21 on the season, James averaged 30 points per game in December. At age 37, he is clearly still capable of competing at the NBA level.

James’ main issues right now are more team-related than personal, as the Lakers still lag behind Western Conference rivals and have had to compete without Anthony Davis, who suffered an injury earlier this month. Even when Davis returns, however, Los Angeles has not demonstrated an ability to make the most of the star power on its roster.

For the first time since his earliest days as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers, James is playing superbly well on a team that is not in contention to win a championship. It’s unclear how this will affect his long-term mindset in seasons to come, but for now, he seems content with his personal success.

“I know it takes steps to get there, but once you get there and know how to get there, playing basketball at this level just to be playing basketball is not in my DNA. It’s not in my DNA anymore,” James said. “So we’ll see what happens and see how fresh my mind stays over the next couple years.”

Free diver Kerry Hollowell has a rigorous training routine for competitions ever since she began participating in the sport over five years ago, and she shared how she keeps her body in shape in an exclusive interview with uSports.

“Right now, since Amorgos [Greece] up until now, I’ve just taken a break,” said 41-year-old Hollowell. “So I’ll start back on breath training and offseason training, so I’m at the gym, I’ll swim, I’ll start implementing some breath-holding work and some equalization work. Equalization is generally the thing that stops us from going deeper, not our breath-hold.”

“I’ll do that maybe one or two days a week, for now, and then as I get closer to the season or to a competition, I’ll go to the place or go somewhere to train depth. I’ll start training depth about a month, or month and a half. The more time the better. That’s when I’ll start training going deeper and deeper, progressively, working on getting deep.”

The diver and emergency doctor from North Carolina was referring to the Authentic Big Blue, a competition that began on Sept. 16 on a Greek Island. She has been able to dive up to 75 meters deep, but is hoping to improve to 80 meters.

Hollowell can also hold her breath for over 5:38 minutes.

“I do strength and conditioning, I work a lot of functional fitness, the same types of exercises you would do in cross-fit,” said the Gabonese-born Moussi, 36. “Then, depending on what you’re trying to work (build more power in your strikes, build grip strength, etc.) I do a lot of exercises that require gripping and lifting/keeping a grip. It’s a lot of push-pull to develop more power, more explosiveness in my striking.”

uSports Body: Robert Guerrero’s Daily Workout… by uSports

Robert Guerrero is both a two-time IBF featherweight and a one-time junior lightweight champion, but winning those three titles did not come easy for the Mexican-American fighter.

Guerrero, 34, boasts a straightforward yet rigorous daily training routine. In an exclusive interview with uSports.org ahead of his July 15 fight against undefeated former WBC lightweight champion Omar Figueroa Jr. at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum — the main card of a Premier Boxing Champions event at the recently-renovated arena in Long Island — the 5-foot-9, 147-pound boxer revealed what a typical workout day looks like for him.

“Typical training day for Robert Guerrero is get up at 5 in the morning, go for a nice run of at least 45 minute to an hour and then breakfast,” the southpaw told uSports. “After that, hit the cross-fit gym about ten o’clock to do my strength and conditioning workout, eat again, then relax a bit. Then I hit the boxing gym about 4-4:30 and just finish out my day there.”

Guerrero, who earned his nickname “The Ghost” because of his elusiveness in the ring, went undefeated in his first 12 professional fights as a rising 126-pound prospect, including an eighth-round stoppage of former world champion Enrique Sanchez in June 2004.

The Gilroy, California native learned how to box at the age of nine from his father. He tries several different types of exercises at the boxing gym.

“I do the whole rounds: shadow-boxing, jumprope, heavy bags, speed bags, double ends,” Guerrero said. “You name it, we do it.”

“I also do mitt work with my father, come home, have dinner, and then do it again the next day,” the boxer concluded with a smile.

Guerrero (33-6-1, 18 KOs) announced his retirement from his 16-year career on July 17 after his loss to Figueroa in Uniondale, New York.

“First, I want to thank God for allowing me to have a wonderful career,” Guerrero, 34, said in a statement. “I’m a kid from a small town in Gilroy, California, who made it to the mountaintop of the boxing world. When I was a young kid growing up, I always believed in myself, but never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined a small-town kid like myself would be fighting in front of millions of fans.”

Figueroa (27-0-1, 18 KOs) — who was coming off a 19-month hiatus from boxing — dropped Guerrero five times in total before the bout was stopped after three rounds, despite Guerrero starting off strong in the first round.

According to Compubox stats, Figueroa landed 88 of his 185 punches thrown (48%), whilst Guerrero landed 78 of 201 thrown (39%). The loss was Guerrero’s third straight defeat and his first by knockout. Guerrero — who also won interim belts at lightweight and welterweight — was coming off 11 months of inactivity.

According to Nielsen Media, the fight received up to 1,039,000 viewers on FOX Sports.

Harlem Globetrotter Alex “Moose” Weekes sat down with uSports for an exclusive interview in which he discussed his weekly training regimen, among other things.

Harlem Globetrotter Moose Weekes on his training routine

Harlem Globetrotter Moose Weekes On His Workout… by uSports
Weekes began in a rather unexpected and funny way: by revealing that his hair, which he kept as an afro for the interview, is the first thing that he always makes sure looks great.

“First I get up and train my hair, because it likes to do what it wants,” said the 6-foot-8 basketball star with a smile. “Next, I always try to hydrate in the morning because that’s another thing with the hair, which definitely increases my sweat.”

Weekes, who is know for his high-flying dunks, said in an interview with the Gwinnett Daily Post in 2015 that he hasn’t had short hair “since about the eighth grade.” He earned his nickname because his giant hair sometimes looks like a pair of antlers.

The 32-year-old forward, who led the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders in blocks as a freshman, also broke the college’s record for most blocked shots in a game with eight. During his time in college — from which he graduated in 2005 — Weekes studied wellness and exercise science and enjoyed training other athletes, so fitness is clearly important to the Globetrotter.

Weekes then went on to describe his typical workout routine and how he generally ensures his body remains healthy. The forward, who signed a full-time contract with the Globetrotters in 2012, explained that the team — which travels very frequently — doesn’t always stay in hotels that provide the best training facilities, so he must often adapt to the circumstances.

“I always try to get a good stretch and foam roll in before practice, Weekes said. “It’s difficult sometimes when we’re on the road because you don’t always get a hotel with a great weight-lifting facility, so you have to make those adjustments.  That’s also where the health and wellness kicks in, that I know what to do with what I’ve got.”

The towering player is on the road a lot, indeed. From 2012-2015, Weekes played with the Globetrotters in 23 different countries — including North Korea — as part of the team’s international tours.

“If it’s just a plyometric workout, I’m just doing pushups and sit-ups, that’s what I’ve go to do,” Weekes said. “If I can get in there with some dumbbells, I’ll do that. I also travel with my speed latter.

“There’s all sorts of things you can do, and not just for your body, but just trying to find different ways to warm up, especially as we get later into our season or tour,” he finished by saying.

Weekes’ other pre-game habits include drinking coconut water and eating bee pollen.

Dana Vollmer, U.S. Olympic Swimmer, On… by uSports

Team USA Olympic swimmer, Dana Vollmer, won a bronze medal in the 100 m butterfly and a silver in the 4X100 m freestyle relay in Rio. At the London Olympics in 2012 she won three gold medals and set two world records. She earned gold in the 800 m freestyle relay, 400 m medley relay and 100 m butterfly setting the record in the butterfly of 55.98, the first woman to swim the event in under 56 seconds.

What she has accomplished as a swimmer and as an athlete is amazing. Vollmer was diagnosed with a condition called Long QT Syndrome, which is the cause of sudden death in athletes due to a spike in heart rate to around 250 beats per minute. Vollmer was informed she shouldn’t swim any more, but unable to determine that it was the swimming that was the cause of the random spike in heart rate doctors allowed her to compete provided she carried a defibrillator to meets with her. She has been cleared of all of her symptoms since 2009.

Her training regiment includes much more than just swimming laps in the pool, she does just as much training on land as she does in the water.

“We do a lot of alternative training, I’ve done a lot of my training in the ocean and we do kick boxing, we’ve done ballet, we’ve done step classes and spin classes. It’s not just about getting in shape for swimming, it’s about an overall athlete,” Vollmer said. “I still have to work on my walls, on starts and that’s being just athletic. Our coach feels that any way we can increase our athletic ability is going to help me perform when I get into the pool. I’ve really loved ocean training, just a different kind of being in the water, and learning how to deal with currents and waves and outside stressers and still being able to use the water and learn how to move my body through the water. When I go from that into a pool, it’s so calm and just seems like it’s just full of potential.”

He is a three-time Olympian having competed in the 2008, 2012 and this year’s Rio Olympics. He shared his pre-competition diet and post-competition comfort foods with uSports. There ought to be some reward for all those early mornings.

“I don’t follow a strict diet, but I definitely try to stay away from too many simple sugars, I always make sure I have fruits and vegetables pretty much with every meal. I’ll have a good ratio of proteins to carbs,” Adrian said. “Really anything you think I don’t eat, I probably don’t eat it. After the Games there are quite a few things I will splurge on, one of which is ice cream, I really like ice cream, especially cookies n’ cream or mint chocolate chip. I also like Oreos dipped in milk, I don’t know, something about an Oreo dipped in milk, it just soaks it up really well.”

Chicago Sky’s Betnijah Laney Talks Rehab For… by uSports

June 3, 2016 is a date Chicago Sky guard Betnijah Laney would prefer to forget.

In the second quarter of Chicago’s matchup with the Washington Mystics, the same team that her college teammate Kahleah Copper plays for, Laney tore her anterior-cruciate ligament.

Soon after, she learned she tore her meniscus as well, requiring extensive rehab and abruptly ending her 2016 season.

Laney, 22, will also miss a likely second stint in the WNBL in Australia, where she was one of the best players on the roster for the Perth Lynx, finishing the season averaging 15.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game.

PERTH LYNX BIO: BETNIJAH LANEY

“I think my whole time being in college I might have missed two games because of injury,” Laney told uSports in an exclusive interview. “It was a big shocker for me to know that I was going to miss the whole season.”

But there was no use in sulking. Bad luck or not, this was the hand she was dealt.

So instead of feeling sorry for herself, Laney reached out to players and coaches familiar with the injury for advice.

“It was my first injury of this stature and it was tough to hear at first,” she recalled. “My coaches, teammates assured me that I would be okay. I’ve spoken to other players who’ve had the same injury and it’s just all been encouraging. It helps me to feel better.”

Once she cleared the mental hurdle Laney through herself into rehab, which, for now, is a bit challenging.

Since the surgery is still fairly recent and the swelling is still subsiding, Laney is limited in what she can actually do with the knee.

“I really can’t put pressure on it so my rehab consists of just bending and straightening it. Just trying to fire up the muscles that I lost,” she said. “So, right now, that’s pretty much it until I’m really able to put pressure on it and, you know, start doing some really good strength things of that nature.”

In the meantime, the 6-foot guard is working on her upper body and cardio, keeping the other parts in shape for when she is able to work more on the knee specifically.

“I’ll do an arm bike workout, for cardio,” Laney said. “And just a lift, like upper body lift.”

Aly Raisman, a 22-year-old on the Team USA 2016 Olympic gymnastics team will be competing in a few weeks in Brazil. She is the captain of the squad that is projected to win gold in the overall gymnastics program. She discussed her training and pre-competition rituals with uSports.

Raisman took a year off in after the 2012 London Olympics and had to really dig deep to get back into gymnast shape.

Working out is her job and she takes it seriously. She frequently works a 7.5-hour-day, with the hours are split up for rest in between. “Everyday I workout from 8:30 am to around 11:30 am and then I go back [to the gym] from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm at night,” Raisman told our parent site uInterview. “I do a lot of conditioning and strength and flexibility and then I do a lot of routines.”

When it comes to competing she has a few tricks that help keep her calm and mentally prepare.

“Before a competition I always like to call my parents just to talk to them,” she said. “Normally, I’m not with them because I’m traveling with the National team so I’m normally in another country. To hear their voice and just to have them give me a couple words of advice is really great,” Raisman said.

After talking to her parents and before competing she doesn’t over analyze her events or competition and trusts that she is prepared enough. “I like to just listen to music just to relax and do my hair and make-up and not really think about it too much,” she said.

Dagmara Wozniak, a saber on the 2016 US Fencing Team who will be competing in the Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil this August, discussed her typical day of training, the biggest challenges she’s faced in competition, and her career goals with uSports.

Wozniak, 28, was one of the more than 75 Team USA Olympians to attend the 100-Day Countdown celebration in New York’s Times Square on April 27.

“I wake up around 7 or 8 am and then go to the gym for about an hour and a half to do some specific strengthening exercises for fencing, to get faster, more explosive,” Wozniak told uSports exclusively. “Then I go off to practice around 5 or 6 o’clock–I practice around three blocks away from here, so it’s really close–and then practice for about four hours, one-on-one with the coach, footwork with the group, and then sparring with other athletes that are part of the club.”

Wozniak was born in Wroclaw, Poland of Polish parents but she and her family move to the US when she was one year old. She was raised in New Jersey, where she attended Colonia High School in Woodbridge Township. She began fencing at the age of 9 at the Polish-American Fencing School. After graduating high school in 2006, she attended St. John’s University, where she graduated in 2013 with a degree in Biology.

She won a team gold medal at the 2011 Pan American Games, and then both individual and team gold medals at the 2015 Pan American Games. Wozniak also helped Team USA win a bronze medal at the 2011 World Fencing Championships in Catania, Italy, as well as a gold medal at the 2014 World Championships in Kazan, Russia. The gold medal win marked the team’s first title at the event since 2005.

“One of the things that attracts me to [fencing] is that it’s a combat sport, so it’s not, you know, running against the ground,” Wozniak said of the challenge of her sport. “The ground’s never going to change on you, so you might know your opponent, but they might do something completely different, or maybe they’re having a really good day and they’re doing things they normally don’t do fencing really well, so it’s always really important to try to adjust to that.

“We watch each other fence and we’re pretty much the same competitive pool as all the competition, but like I said, anything can change.”

After traveling to Beijing as a replacement athlete for the 2008 Olympic Games, Wozniak qualified for her first team as an individual in London in 2012 and placed eighth in her Olympic debut.

Regardintg the main difference between an epee, a saber and a foil, she said: “I believe that we [sabers] are like the sprinters of the group. We’re really fast and we’re trying to establish right of way, so we really need to be quick on our feet. We don’t have time involved, we’re pretty much just moving back and forth, you know, making decisions in a split second. It’s a really fast reaction time, and at the same time trying to move as fast as you can.”

Wozniak is ranked as one of the top 10 saber fencers in the world. Her hobbies include watching movies, snowboarding, reading and dancing.

“I definitely think my ultimate goal as an Olympian really resonates with what Michelle Obama said in terms of hoping that I can inspire other girls to pick up a sport,” Wozniak finally said. “It doesn’t have to be fencing, even though it’s definitely fun to try; it’s not popular, so a lot of people don’t know about it, but we have great ambassadors that are really bringing the sport to the light, and showing what’s great about it. I just want to be a role model.”

“I can only hope that I do that for someone else,” she said with a smile.

Lindsay Whalen, a guard for both the Minnesota Lynx of the WNBA and the United States Women’s National Basketball Team who will be competing in this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil, explained what a typical day of training looks like for her at the 100-Day Countdown celebration in New York’s Time Square on April 27.

Lindsay Whalen On Her Training Routine

“Usually, say practice is at 10 o’clock, I’ll usually get to the gym around 8:15 or 8:30,” Whalen told uSports exclusively. “I’ll do some treatment therapy, get ready for practice and start my warmup.”

She then continued. “I’ll get on the elliptical, kind of get my body loose, do a little foam-rolling and stretching, then I’ll do a guard workout with my guard coach, a little skill session that includes dribbling, passing, whatever we have to work on that day.”

As for the what she normally does after the actual practice, Whalen then said she simply likes to cool off and relax like any other young athlete: “We’ll start practice, which will go for about 2 or 2 1/2 hours, then I’ll hit the cold tub after that, let the muscles relax, have some lunch around 1:30/2 o’clock, and then go home and rest up for the next day.”

Whalen, 34, was a four-time All-Minnesota Conference pick at Hutchinson High School in Hutchinson, Minnesota, and helped lead her team there to three consecutive conference championships. She was also a four-time honorable mention All-State selection.

She became the University of Minnesota’s all-time leading scorer on January 25, 2004 against Michigan State her senior year, surpassing 1994 Wade Trophy Winner Carol Ann Shudlick. Whalen also finished her career with 2,285 points, fifth best in Big Ten Conference history.

She was a two-time Wade Trophy Finalist (2003, 2004) and a two-time Naismith Award Finalist (2003, 2004). She was also the first Minnesota player to earn All-American honors in three different seasons, and led the Golden Gophers to their first-ever Final Four appearance in 2004, one of three consecutive NCAA Tournament showings for Minnesota.

After being drafted by the Connecticut Sun as the fourth overall pick in the 2004 WNBA draft, Whalen played five seasons with the Sun before joining the Minnesota Lynx in 2010. She led the Lynx to its first WNBA Championship the following year. The Lynx finished the regular season 27–7, good for the second best record in franchise history and best in the league, and Whalen led the league in assists with 5.9 per game.

On September 7, 2013, Whalen became only the second player in WNBA history to record 4,000 points, 1,500 assists, and 1,000 rebounds in her career, joining Becky Hammon.

Whalen won her first Olympic gold medal in the 2012 London games, as well as two World Cup titles with the women’s national team in 2010 (Czech Republic) and 2014 (Turkey). She is also a five-time WNBA All-Star and three-time WNBA Champion, her last two wins coming in 2013 and 2015. She also plays for AGÜ Spor of Eurobasket.

Now, as she heads to her second Olympic Games, it appears safe to say Whalen is more than prepared.

While it may seem easy to the casual observer, gymnastics is an incredibly demanding sport. Not only does it require balance, strength and flexibility, but a gymnast also needs good technique to perform without injury at the highest level. For United States Olympic Gold Medalist Gaby Douglas, a good pre-event routine is crucial to putting in a good performance when the competition is on the line.

“Before we start, we do a warm up for about five minutes,” she explained to uSports.org. “We do arm circles and head movements and wrist movements and the splits and the straddles because it’s very important to keep our muscles warm.”

Beyond the basic necessities, a good routine also has a variety of movements and exercise. “We do these obstacle courses,” Douglas continued. “You run, jump on the table 40 times, go on the other side, jump on it 20 times, do 100 crunches, 25 split jumps on each leg, 50 stradles, handstand push-ups and arch-ups. A lot of that good stuff.”

Autumn Calabrese Explains Her ’21 Day Fix… by uSports

uSports recently sat down with 21 Day Fix creator and Beach Body fitness instructor Autumn Calabrese. In the initial video, she talked about the importance of her easy-to-use nutritional plan. In part two of the interview, she talked about the workout plan and how it was built for everyone — busy or free, skinny or big, athletic or couch potato.

“They’re 30 minute workouts,” Autumn explained. “They’re seven different workouts, you’re going to do something different everyday of the week. That keeps your body from adapting and also keeps you from getting bored, so you’re going to stick with it.”

“[Each workout contains] minute long intervals with 20 seconds rest periods,” Autumn continued. “There’s a modifier. The way I wanted the workouts to be was that anyone could do them. So if you never worked out a day in your life, you could do it and benefit from it and you weren’t going to feel like it was impossible to achieve. But I also wanted somebody like me — who works out, who’s an athlete — to still be able to benefit from it as well. So you’re going to push yourself as hard as you can in that one minute interval.”

Now, a modifier in a video is different from most workout tapes that are filled to the brim with six-pack athletes. Here, there are athletes on the screen, but there is also the normal person to keep pace with. It is more about the inclusion than the exclusion seen in other exercise plans.

Best of all, if you do eventually outpace the 21 Day Fix plan, there is always the chance to switch over to the 21 Day Fix Extreme. It is for the athlete looking to get that edge, as both the dietary and exercise plans are kicked up an extra level.

Olympic swimmer Nathan Adrian made a big splash at the London games. A three-time Olympic gold winner, he holds the US record for the 50 and 100-yard freestyle. The training and food regiment for an Olympic swimmer is rigorous: with an athlete having to consume roughly 6,000 calories a day. So Adrian’s average training day begins about 5:15 am, where he eats breakfast and then heads to the pool by 5:45 where he roughly swims for two hours. “[Then] I get a second breakfast, nap, wake up and gets some more food… I go to weights practice at 12:30, lift weights from 12:30 to 2:15 or so,” told uInterview before the London games. And finally, he takes another hour in the pool before calling it a day. Phew!
