The NHL trade deadline ended on Monday afternoon. Various teams rushed to make last-minute deals in order to either strengthen or rebuild their respective rosters. Here are some of the biggest trades that went down just ahead of the National Hockey League’s trade deadline. We take a look at a few trades from Sunday and every major move from Monday.

1) The Colorado Avalanche acquired Carl Soderberg from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for prospects Josh Dickinson and Ryder Rolston.

2) Colorado gets defender Patrik Nemeth from the Detroit Red Wings fora 2022 fourth-round pick.

3) Colorado acquires goaltender Devan Dubnyk from the San Jose Sharks for Greg Pateryn and a 2021 fifth-round pick.

Soderberg marks his return to Colorado with this trade. Soderberg previously played for the Avalanche from 2015-2019. Colorado traded him to the Arizona in 2019. The Avalanche get a veteran to bolster their team, which is currently in first place in the Western Conference. The Blackhawks gain prospects Dickinson and Rolston.

The Avalanche continues to make moves to improve their roster and gear up for a deep playoff run. The team seems to be doing this by acquiring previous franchise players. Nemeth played with Colorado when Soderberg was part of the team.

Colorado also gets a veteran goalie to help their goaltending depth and needs.

4) Detroit trades F Anthony Mantha to the Washington Capitals for F Richard Panik, F Jakub Vrana, a 2021 first-round pick and a 2022 second-round pick.

Clearly, the Red Wings are stockpiling picks and young assets while trading away their stars as they begin the rebuilding process.

5) The Capitals also acquired forward Michael Raffl from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for a 2021 fifth-round draft pick.

Matha, the 26-year-old forward, has produced 21 points (11 goals and 10 assists) in 42 games this season. He should be a great addition to the Capitals’ high-volume offense featuring Alex Ovechkin. Matha is the high-profile addition here, but Raffl isn’t too shabby either. He has three goals and five assists in 34 games for the Flyers this year.

“We really liked Anthony for quite a while now,” Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan said. “I like a lot of the attributes: the size (6-foot-5, 234 pounds), the skill, the shot, the scoring ability. He’s a really good skater for his size. I think it’s a player that we’ve liked and talked about a lot in our room, and we had a chance to acquire him, so we went out and got him.”

5) The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired F Nick Foligno from the Columbus Blue Jackets and F Stefan Noesan from the Sharks in a three-team deal in exchange for a 2021 first-round pick, a 2021 fourth-round pick as well as a fourth-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.

6) Toronto also added goalie David Rittich from the Calgary Flames for a third-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.

7) Toronto traded a 2022 fifth-round draft pick for defender Ben Hutton from the Anaheim Ducks.

8) Toronto sent forward Alexander Barabanov to the Sharks for forward Anti Suomela.

The Maple Leafs were in a full-blown buy mode. They are attempting to make a deep postseason run, and adding Foligno will certainly take some pressure off of Auston Matthews and John Tavares. Toronto has put all their chips on the table and are going all-in on this season. It is championship or bust for the Maple Leafs.

“I felt that the group of players and coaches deserved every effort on our end, on management, to bolster the team and try to give us as great a chance as possible down the stretch in our division and into the playoffs,” Toronto general manager Kyle Dubas said. “We were excited to be able to, we believe, add the pieces that will continue to enhance our ability to be as competitive as possible as we go into the playoffs and roll from there.”

9) The Boston Bruins acquired Taylor Hall and Curtis Lazar from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Anders Bjork and a second-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft.

10) The Ottawa Senators dealt Mike Reilly to the Bruins and sent Braydon Coburn to the New York Islanders. The Senators received a third-round pick and seventh-round pick in 2022 for the two players.

After signing a one-year, $8 million dollar deal before the star of the season, Hall can become a free agent at the end of the season. The 29-year-old forward has tallied 19 points (two goals and 17 assists) in 37 games for the struggling Sabres this season.

As the No. 1 pick by the Oilers in the 2010 NHL Draft, Hall has scored 582 points (220 goals, 362 assists) in 664 regular-season games for the Sabres, Devils, Coyotes and Oilers. He won the Hart Trophy in 2017-18 when he was voted as the NHL most valuable player after scoring an NHL career-high 93 points (39 goals, 54 assists) in 76 games for the Devils.

Adding Reilly also helps bolster Boston’s defense. The 27-year-old has 19 assists in 40 games this season. The Bruins’ defense has been extremely banged up this season so Reilly will be a welcome addition to Boston.

Right now, the Bruins are in fourth place in the MassMutual East Division. Since the top four teams make the playoffs, this move should help Boston’s chances of making a Stanley Cup run.

Other Moves:

11) The Winnipeg Jets acquired defensemen Jordie Benn from the Vancouver Canucks for a 2021 sixth-round draft pick.

12) The Nashville Predators received defenseman Erik Gudbranson from Ottawa in exchange for defenseman Brandon Fortunato and 2023 seventh-round draft pick.

13) The Montreal Canadiens acquired defenseman Erik Gustafsson from Philadelphia in exchange for a 2022 seventh-round draft pick.

14) The Florida Panthers added forward Sam Bennett and a 2022 sixth-round draft pick from Calgary in exchange for forward Emil Heineman and a 2022 second-round draft pick.

15) The Canucks acquired defenseman Madison Bowey and a fifth-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft from Chicago in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft.

16) Anaheim landed defenseman Haydn Fleury from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for defenseman Jani Hakanpaa and a sixth-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.

17) The Vegas Golden Knights acquired forward Mattias Janmark, defenseman Nick DeSimone and a fifth-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft from Chicago and San Jose in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft and a third-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft. San Jose additionally receives a fifth-round pick in the 2022 draft.

18) The Tampa Bay Lightning acquire defenseman Fredrik Claesson from the Sharks for goaltender Magnus Chrona.

19) The Edmonton Oilers landed defenseman Dmitry Kulikov from the Devils for a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.

20) The Blackhawks acquired forward Adam Gaudette from Vancouver in exchange for forward Matthew Highmore.

21) The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired forward Jeff Carter from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for conditional draft picks in 2022 and 2023.

Montreal Canadiens head coach Claude Julien was more than frustrated after his team’s overtime loss to the Dallas Stars Saturday night. Julien, who rarely speaks out about officiating, felt that referees Dean Morton and Garrett Rank missed several calls.

“It’s pretty obvious we should have gotten power plays,” said Julien. “Some people need to be held accountable after this game. We had to beat two teams tonight.”

“We couldn’t talk to the official,” he continued. “He was screaming at our players. I told him, when he was close to the bench, that I hoped he watched his games back. He told me to take a hike.”

SLIDESHOW: 50 GREAT SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2019

The Canadiens went up 3-0 in the second, only to blow that lead and lose the game in overtime.

Joel Armia scored the first goal with a tap-in off Max Domi‘s loose rebound. In the second, Jordan Weal put one away to make it 2-0. Less than three minutes later, Nick Cousins beat Ben Bishop between the pads to put Montreal up three.

But Dallas was ready to make a comeback. Mattias Janmark and Blake Comeau added two in the Stars comeback, but Tyler Seguin proved to be the deciding factor, putting one away in the second, as well as the overtime winner on a nifty backhand goal.

“That was a good hockey team over there,” Domi said. “They’re a veteran team and they stuck with it. They got some bounces, some power plays and they capitalized.”

Montreal has now lost four in a row and look to bounce back as they take on the Detroit Red Wings on Monday at 7:30 p.m. ET in Detroit.

The game will air on TSN2.

Hockey Hall of Famer Ted Lindsay dies at 93

Ted Lindsay was a Hall of Fame hockey player who made contributions on and off the ice. During his time with the Detroit Red Wings, he served as the muscle and meanness of their “Production Line” era during the 1960s. Off the ice, he helped build the first NHL Players Union. He passed away on Monday at age 93.

NHL Great Ted Lindsay Dead At 93

No official cause of death was given for Lindsay. The nine-time All-Star, nicknamed “Terrible Ted,” was one of the game’s best left wings of his time. He ended his career with four Stanley Cup Finals wins.  Lindsay, Sid Abel and Gordie Howe formed an offensive juggernaut of a line that made Detroit the first of the NHL’s great postwar dynasties.

Lindsay changed the game of hockey for the better. After being named the president of the players union, he was first stripped of his captaincy and then traded to the struggling Chicago Blackhawks. Then, Red Wings general manager Jack Adams spread fake rumors about Lindsay criticizing his teammates and even went so far as to show reporters a falsified contract between the organization and the player.

However, he was recognized for his role in the sport when he retired. The Hockey Hall of Fame waived its three-year waiting period when he was inducted in 1966. And after every Stanley Cup Final, when the winning team skates around the rink with the cup hoisted in the air, that is a tradition Lindsay started in 1950. Even though recognition came in, Lindsay was humble.

30 SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

“I saw it sitting there, and I thought, ‘I’ll just pick it up and I’ll take it over.’ … I just moved along the boards. I didn’t have it over my head. I had it so they could read it,” he said in 2013. “I wasn’t starting a tradition, I was just taking care of my fans that paid our salary.”

Perhaps the most meaningful tribute to Lindsay was when the NHL Players’ Association renamed its MVP award after Lindsay.

After his playing career, the Red Wings saved their relationship with an all-time great. The team retired his No. 7 jersey and he even became the GM of the team for three seasons.

“It didn’t matter that they traded me,” he said in 1995. “I have a Red Wing on my forehead and on my behind and on my heart. That will never change.”

No funeral plans have been announced for Lindsay.

The San Jose Sharks have been aggressive this year. No team has been as keen as adding on high-end talent as the Sharks were.

Wings Trade Gustav Nyqvist To Sharks

Currently, they’re sitting in second place in the Pacific Division, just below the Calgary Flames but ahead of the Vegas Golden Knights. On Sunday, they added another star when they shipped off two draft picks to the Detroit Red Wings and brought in forward Gustav Nyquist as the Monday trade deadline loomed closer.

Nyquist is only 29 years old and was leading the Red Wings in scoring this season. He notched 49 points with 16 goals and 33 assists in 62 games. Though San Jose wanted him, he’s only a rental player with his contract up this summer. Then, he’ll hit the market as an unrestricted free agent. But that shouldn’t matter for the Sharks as they’re banking heavily on this season and Nyquist has shown he wants to be in San Jose. He had to waive his no-trade clause for the deal. The Red Wings still retain 30% of the Swedish talent’s contract, bringing his cap hit to $3.325 million.

“Gustav is a talented, versatile forward who plays with speed and a strong hockey sense,” Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said. “His track record of strong play and character speak for themselves, and we’re very excited to add him to our dressing room.”

30 SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

Detroit will get the less valuable of San Jose and Florida’s second-round pick in 2019 and also San Jose’s third-round 2020 selection. There’s a clause in the deal that if Nyquist pushes the team to the Stanley Cup Finals this year or if he re-signs this offseason, the 2020 selection turns into a second-rounder.

The move is an impressive piece of work by Wilson. It brings in new talent while also keeping the team just under the salary cap ceiling with just over $79 million in contracts to pay out. Interestingly, a week before the trade, Nyquist revealed that his biggest fear is sharks.

Both the younger players and the veterans of the Detroit Red Wings displayed great skill in Thursday’s home opening 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild.

NHL Opening Night games scores

The game marked the Wings’ first contest at the new $863 million Little Caesars Arena, and former defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom made an appearance for the ceremonial puck drop.

Anthony Mantha scored the team’s first goal at the venue, and Dylan Larkin netted 23 seconds later. Captain Henrik Zetterberg and Czech winger Martin Frk also scored.

Meanwhile, the New York Rangers suffered a 4-2 home loss to the Colorado Avalanche in their opener on Thursday. Mika Zibanejad scored both goals — both on power plays in the last 2:30 of the first period — for New York, which blew several late chances.

“I think honestly on most nights if we make some of those mistakes that we did tonight, we will be on the wrong side of things,” said defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk, who was making his debut with the Rangers after one season with the Washington Capitals. “I think we saw firsthand the level of play was much higher than it was in the preseason. They came out to play. We fed into what they do well — transition hockey, making skilled plays. They are a fast team and we just kind of fed them in the wrong areas and they were able to capitalize.”

The Capitals beat the Ottawa Senators 5-4, the Boston Bruins beat the Nashville Predators 4-3, and the Chicago Blackhawks thrashed the Pittsburgh Penguins 10-1.

The Islanders visit the Columbus Blue Jackets for their season opener on Friday at 7 pm EST.

The brand-new Vegas Golden Knights will visit the Dallas Stars on Friday at 8:30 pm EST for their opener.

OTTAWA, ON - DECEMBER 29: Gustav Nyquist #14 of the Detroit Red Wings skates against the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre on December 29, 2016 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

The NHL’s Department of Player Safety has offered Detroit Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist an in-person hearing following his high-stick on Minnesota Wild defenseman Jared Spurgeon.

Red Wings’ Gustav Nyquist High-Sticks Wilds’ Jared Spurgeon In the Face

The vicious hit came with 5:49 remaining int the first period of the Wild’s 6-3 home win on Sunday. It all began with a scramble for the puck along the boards. Scurgeon hit Nyquist with a cross-check from behind into the boards, and the Detroit forward– understandably unhappy– retaliated by flinging his stick up and whacking Scurgeon straight in the face with the blade.

The Minnesota defenseman instantly fell to the ice, and a scuffle between the two teams quickly ensued that led officials to join the melee to break opponents up.

Spurgeon got a few stitches and returned to the game just minutes later. Nyquist received a minor penalty for high-sticking, while many wondered why he wasn’t ejected from the game altogether.

An in-person hearing means the NHL has the option to suspend Nyquist six games or more. The Department of Player Safety stated a date and time for the hearing had yet to be determined. Nyquist could also choose a phone hearing.

“(It was) completely accidental,” Nyquist told reporters after Sunday’s game. “Obviously didn’t mean to do that. My stick gets caught. I’m trying to get body position on him and I’m happy he was out there again. Obviously had no intention of doing that, so my stick gets caught and it looks bad but I’m happy he’s OK.”

He added: “That’s just a battle, that’s just the way it goes. Along the boards, then after that I’m trying to get body position on him and my stick gets caught, so it was good to see him out there right after.”

Spurgeon played 22:16 and recorded an assist in the win.

“I haven’t really seen a replay or anything. I’m sure something will happen and the league will do something” Spurgeon said according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “I’m just happy it didn’t go in my eye or something like that.”

Spurgeon’s teammates also wondered why Nyquist didn’t receive a harsher punishment from officials.

“I just don’t understand how that’s not a five-minute penalty. Obviously he’s not a player that is going to, I want to say do it on purpose except anybody watching the game, … it’s a five-minute penalty regardless,” Minnesota goaltender Devan Dubnyk said. “There’s four guys out there that didn’t see it. But it’s good on us to go get one and make sure that we didn’t let it bother us. but it’s a dangerous play. Again, it’s not a guy that’s trying to do it, but it’s a retaliatory thing and it should be a five-minute penalty.”

Nyquist doesn’t have many previous dirty plays on his NHL record, aside from a $2,000 fine for diving/embellishment last season.

TSN’s Bob McKenzie referenced the six-game suspension Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith received last season for high-sticking Wild forward Charlie Coyle as a potential similar punishment Nyquist could receive.

Jakub Voracek Scores in OT in Flyers' 4-3 Win vs Red Wings

After the Philadelphia Flyers rallied to tie it late in the third period, Jakub Voracek scored at 1:41 of overtime to give them a 4-3 home victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday.

Jakub Voraeck Scores In OT To Lead Flyers To 4-3 Win Over Red Wings

Claude Giroux led a 2-on-1 rush and fed Voracek, who fired a one-timer past goalie Petr Mrazek from the right side for his sixth goal.

“The [defenseman] came at me, and I told myself if he comes at me and goes down, I’m going to pass it across,” said Giroux, who extended his NHL career-high point streak to 10 games with the assist. “Ended up pretty well.”

Philadelphia defenseman Mark Streit tied it 3-3 when he scored following a scamble in the crease with 1:04 left in regulation.

Chris VandeVelde and Roman Lyubimov also scored to help the Flyers run their regular-season home winning streak against the Red Wings to 12 games. The Red Wings last defeated the Flyers in Philadelphia during the regular season on Jan. 25, 1997.

Michal Neuvirth made 22 saves for The Flyers (5-5-1).

Henrik Zetterberg, Dylan Larkin and Andreas Athanasiou scored for the Red Wings.

After Detroit blew a two-goal lead, Zetterberg scored at 8:18 of the third period to give them a 3-2 lead. Zetterberg finished off a 2-on-1 with Tomas Tatar. Tatar created the break when he robbed Philadelphia’s Radko Gudas of the puck at mid-ice, passing rapidly to Justin Abdelkader before a return pass set up the fast break.

Larkin and Athanasiou scored 16 seconds apart in the first period to put the Red Wings up 2-0.

It marked the eighth time in 11 games the Flyers allowed the opening goal, although they’re 3-4-1 in those games.

“We’ve got to stop doing this,” Giroux said. “It’s getting too old. We need to find a way to have better starts.”

Mrazek made 36 saves for Detroit. His first one was clutch: Flyers center Nick Cousins went on a breakaway five minutes into the first period, and Mrazek stayed on his feet and deflected his shot into the corner at 5:02.

VandeVelde scored his first goal in 55 games at 13:39 of the second period to cut the Detroit lead to 2-1, and then Lyubimov’s first NHL goal at 3:51 of the third period tied it 2-2.

”I’m glad I can come out here and contribute and score a goal for her,” VandeVelde said.

The goal capped a dominating second period for Philadelphia, which outshot Detroit 17-6 over the 20 minutes.

Larkin also displayed his dynamic offensive skills late in the first period. He blocked a shot at the Detroit blue line, raced the length of the ice to grab the loose puck, and rapidly fired a backhand shot from the slot off the crossbar with 1:58 remaining.

The Red Wings next host the Winnipeg Jets on Friday, while the Flyers will visit the New York Islanders on Thursday.

In the first of several events in a season-long tribute, the Detroit Red Wings began to honor the arena they have called home for 37 years on Monday night.

Red Wings Pay Tribute To Gordie Howe, Joe Louis Arena In Final Opening Night At Stadium

The Wings defeated the Ottawa Senators 5-1 in their season opener on Monday– the final opening night in the long history of Joe Louis Arena. The pre-game ceremony featured a survey of that history in the form of a video narrated by actor and Michigan native Jeff Daniels.

The team also payed tribute to late Wings player and Hall of Famer Gordie Howe– nicknamed ‘Mr. Hockey’–who passed away in June at the age of 88.

FOX Sports Detroit tweeted the tribute:

Red Wings fans all stood and held up No. 9 signs that were handed to them after the emotional homage.

The Red Wings were also all wearing a “9” on their jerseys, which they will wear all season. “Howe 9” is also painted in red behind each net at Joe Louis Arena.

The team will move to the still-under-construction, $627 million Little Caesars Arena next year for the 2017-2018 season.

Joe Louis Arena opened in 1979 and has housed the Wings ever since. The team played at Olympia Stadium for more than 40 years before that.

Howe won four Stanley Cups with the Red Wings, won six Hart Trophies as the NHL’s most valuable player, and won six Art Ross Trophies as the leading scorer during his time with Detroit between 1946 and 1971.

Gordie Howe, the legendary Detroit Red Wings forward who embodied Canadian hockey, died Friday morning, the team stated. He was 88.

NHL Legend Gordie Howe, ‘Mr. Hockey,’ Dies At 88

His son Murray Howe confirmed his death, texting to The Associated Press: “Mr Hockey left peacefully, beautifully, and w no regrets.”

Howe, who was commonly known as ‘Mr. Hockey,’ played in the NHL for more than 25 years. He retired from the Hartford Whalers in 1980 at the age of 52, and remains among the game’s all-time scoring leaders with 801 goals and 1,850 points in 1,767 games, mostly with the Red Wings.

He also became an idol to Wayne Gretzky and several other notable Canadian players, while also helping the sport attract American fans. Howe even had a hat trick named after him. A “Gordie Howe Hat Trick” is accomplished when a player has one goal, one assist and one fight in a game.

“On behalf of the generations who were thrilled by his play and those who only know of his legend, and on behalf of all the young people and teammates he inspired, we send heartfelt wishes of condolence, comfort and strength to the Howe family and to all who mourn the passing of this treasured icon of our game,” NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement.

Howe suffered a stroke in late October 2014 while at his daughter’s home in Lubbock, Texas, and lost some function on the right side of his body. He had another stroke shortly afterward and family members said chronic back pain, advanced stages of dementia and high blood pressure were taking a toll. Although Howe’s body remained relatively strong, memory loss became a problem that family members noticed before the death of their mother, Colleen, in 2009.

The legendary Canadian right winger helped lead the Red Wings to four Stanley Cups, and won six Hart Trophies as NHL MVP and six Ross Trophies as the league’s top scorer. Howe started playing for Detroit in 1946 at the age of 18, leading the team to seven consecutive first-place finishes in the regular season. He was a part of what was known as “The Production Line” with fellow future Hall of Famers Ted Lindsay and Sid Abel during his 25-year run with the franchise.

“When Gordie came into the NHL, hockey was a Canadian game. He converted it into a North American game,” former NHL President Clarence Campbell said when Howe retired the first time in 1971 because he was playing with arthritis in his left wrist and for a last-place team.

Howe’s wife Colleen helped him get back on the ice two years later, and he began playing professionally alongside his two sons, Mark and Marty– his lifelong dream– in the World Hockey Association. At the age of 45, Howe still had it. He scored 31 goals and had 69 assists, was named MVP of the NHL’s rival league and led the Aeros to the 1973 WHA title– a run that became the subject of a movie: “Mr. Hockey: The Gordie Howe Story.”

Howe ended his 26th and final season in the NHL with the Whalers with 41 points.

With a single shift with the Detroit Vipers in the International Hockey League in 1997, he played professionally in a sixth decade at the age of 69.

“You’ve got to love what you’re doing,” Howe once said. “If you love it, you can overcome any handicap or the soreness or all the aches and pains, and continue to play for a long, long time.”

Mark Howe said his father was “the toughest, meanest guy I’ve ever seen on a pair of skates,” and that’s why he was able to play for decades.

Gordon Howe was born March 31, 1928, in a barn in tiny Floral, Saskatchewan, and raised in nearby on the Canadian prairie in Saskatoon. His father was a laborer and Howe pitched in early, growing strong with the work.

“Greatest player in hockey history,” former ESPN host Keith Olbermann said in a tribute two years ago. “As an all-round athlete in any sport, probably exceeded by Babe Ruth; maybe one or two others.”

In addition to Mark, Marty and Murray, Howe is survived by his daughter Cathy and nine grandchildren.

“For me it’s a big stepping stone, but it [doesn’t] happen without lots of good players I am playing with,” said Datsyuk , who has 902 points. “Lots of helping and supporting, and lots of teaching me, too. Lots of giving me advice. I appreciate all of them.”

There are five other Red Wings players with 900 NHL points or more: Gordie Howe, Steve Yzerman, Alex Delvecchio, Nicklas Lidstrom and Sergei Fedorov. They are all in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Both teams managed to lose two-goal leads before Danny DeKeyser took a shot from the point, which deflected off Zetterberg (who was credited with the goal) and past Boston goalie Jonas Gustavsson with 12:23 left in the game.

Brad Marchand set a franchise record for the Bruins for fastest goal by scoring just 8 seconds into the game. He beat Mrazek with a shot from the right circle, right off a face-off that was won by Boston’s Brett Connolly. Zach Trotman, Loui Eriksson, Dennis Seidenberg and Joonas Kemppainen also scored for the Bruins. Boston goalie Tuukka Rask was pulled after allowing five goals on 24 shots. For the second time in three games, Rask let in five goals. Gustavsson made 10 saves during the game.

Detroit Goalie Petr Mrazek, who celebrated his 24th birthday Sunday, made 17 saves.

The Detroit Red Wings secured what is undoubtedly one of their greatest victories of the season on Thursday night following their 3-2 overtime on-the-road win over the Arizona Coyotes.

RED WINGS RALLY TO BEAT ARIZONA COYOTES 3-2 IN OVERTIME

Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Shane Doan  netted the game’s first two goals for the Coyotes in the second period, but the Red Wings quickly took advantage following penalties to Antoine Vermette and Anthony Duclair. With Vermette in the penalty box for hooking Brendan Smith, Pavel Datsyuk scored through a Justin Abdelkader screen at 11:50 in the third period to cut the Arizona lead to 2-1.

Then, Gustav Nyqvist dove after a rebound shot that Arizona goalie Louis Domingue blocked, and pushed the puck into the back of the net from the crease at 14:20 in the third to tie the game. This was Nyqvist’s 13th goal of the season, but his first in 11 games.

Finally, Danny DeKeyser scored the game winner at 2:08 in OT.  Detroit goalie Petr Mrazek had 27 saves, while Arizona’s Domingue had 22 saves. The Red Wings (23-14-7) will next host the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday night, while the Coyotes (22-16-5) will host the New Jersey Devils on Saturday.

While every sport has some great looking jerseys, no league consistently looks as good as the NHL; it’s hard to compete with hockey’s mixture of historic sweaters and bold colors with one, powerful logo at the middle of the chest. And with winter finally in full swing, here are some of the best NHL jerseys whether you’re watching a game or playing one of your own on the pond.

Detroit Red Wings Jersey

Detroit Red Wings Jersey

While home jerseys usually get the nod, the Red Wings away sweater has the edge here thanks to its red sleeves and white body. And it’s hard to argue with the classic winged wheel; its clean and classic without being too simple.

And on the ice, the Red Wings are just as good. They’ve made the playoffs for 24 straight seasons and are one of the NHL’s model franchises.

Get it here.

Philadelphia Flyers Jersey

Philadelphia Flyers Jersey

Things might not be going too well in Philadelphia, but their jersey remains in the top tier.

Orange jerseys always look nice and the Flyers’ sweater, complete with white highlights and black piping, is no exception. There’s a reason the team has barely changed their look since joining the league in the 1960s: they simply look good.

Get it here.

Washington Capitals Jersey

Washington Capitals Jersey

The standard Caps jerseys are frankly dull; one is red, one is white and they both feature the team’s wordmark with a hockey stick forming the ‘L’. Their alternate jersey, however, takes that basic look and improves on it.

The jersey is based on the team’s original look, which they used from 1974 to the 1990s, and the addition of lighter blue makes a world of difference. While their standard white sweater has some red and navy down the sides, red and blue stars on a white sweater make it no doubt that the Caps call Washington D.C. home.

Detroit Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill has desperately been attempting in the last few weeks to instill in his team the ‘killer instinct’ that will allow them to successfully close out games.

The Red Wings lost 2-1 to the Buffalo Sabres on Monday night at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. “It seems like it’s happening a little bit too often,” forward Brad Richards said. “We’ve got to learn as a team to go into the third period, late in the third period, with the lead, we’ve got to close it out and lock it down. I’m sure we’re going to talk about that and go over that more this week with some time off here.” Detroit has lost third period leads in nine of its last 14 games.

The Red Wings have been outscored 31-21 in the third period, and Richards has stated that it’s not always a defensive issue. The offense also has to step up and score goals.

The Red Wings will next face the Vancouver Canucks at home on Friday.

Jimmy Howard may be sharing his crease with Petr Mrazek, but New York native looked dominant on Tuesday night against Washington. His best, however, wasn’t good enough as the Capitals scored a late goal to send the game to overtime and eventually beat Howard’s Red Wings 3-2 in a shootout.

After Justin Williams scored in the first minute for Washington, Howard grew into the game. Two goals–one each from Tomas Jurco and Henrik Zetterberg–gave Detroit the lead, which they held until the halfway mark of the third period when Alex Ovechkin finally beat Howard.

The game would continue into overtime and eventually a shootout, where the Caps finally solved Howard. He was beaten by both T.J. Oshie and Evgeny Kuznetsov for the loss, but not before making 38 saves on the night.

“I think when you get to overtime, when you get to shootout you’re leaving it to chance a little bit,” Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. “That’s the reality of life sometimes. So I think with [Howard] I’d focus on the fact that he did a great job and I don’t think we get the point if he doesn’t play great.”

Howard’s captain also agreed with the coach’s assessment. “Howie played well tonight. Kept us in the game,” Zetterberg said after the Red Wings were outshot by nearly a two to one ratio. “They had a lot of shots, but I don’t know about scoring chances.”

In the other side of the locker room, Capitals head coach Barry Trotz though the game was the latest demonstration that his goalie is as talented as his scorers. “Everybody talks about the shooters, but we’ve got a pretty good goaltender and we feel confident if we get to that point,” he said.

The NHL has announced last night that Niklas Kronwall, assistant captain of the Detroit Red Wings, will be suspended for tonight’s game seven against the Tampa Bay Lightning. He is being suspended for Monday night’s hit on forward Nikita Kucherov.

The reason behind the suspension is because it is being declared charging, according to a press release by the NHL. Now, it is the way Kronwall launches himself up and drives his foearm into the face of Kucherov that resulted in the hit’s classification as charging.

But what makes this hit deserving of a suspension “is the force with which the hit was delivered and the significant head contact that resulted from Kronwall launching into it.” With this said, the NHL agrees Kucherov could have been hit on the play, but it is the assistant captain’s elevation on the ice that makes it a punishable play.

However, the Detroit Red Wings personnel has showed great dissatisfaction in this decision, even claiming the hit was simply not that egregious.

“We disagree with the decision,” general manager Ken Holland briefly said. On top of this, head coach Mike Babcock has weighed in the severity of the hit.

“It was a good hit,” Babcock stated. “I thought Kucherov was leaning back trying to get out of the way. Kronner’s foot was on the ice when he made contact, elbow tucked into the side… If you go through this series, in game two Callahan did the same to DeKeyser. Last night, Palat got Glendening exactly the same way.”

While Niklas Kronwall does not have the flashiest numbers, he is certainly a leader in the locker room and an important piece of the Red Wings’ defense. This loss is definitely going to hurt them and they need reserves Jakub Kindl or Alexey Marchenko to step up.

Now, should this have been a suspendible hit? Yes, but there have been a ton of hits in the playoffs that were comparable to this and none of those players were suspended – just look at Tom Wilson’s hit on Visnovsky.

So it is terrible that the NHL has decided to suspend Kronwall during such an important game seven. Either be more consistent when it comes to doling out punishment or let the athletes play.

In an incident that is as scary as the Richard Zednick or Clint Malarchuk accidents, Red Wing’s Drew Miller is lucky to still have his eye after a skate slashed him in the face.

The play in question happened during a face off between the Senators’ Mark Stone and the Red Wings’ Luke Glendening. As the two fought for the puck, the winger attempted to come in and support his teammate. Unfortunately, at that moment Stone tumbled to the ice causing his skate to fly up and strike Miller in the face.

He raced off the ice as play continued and was directly rushed to the training room to observe the damage. As previously mentioned, he was lucky the blade missed his eye and only caused a deep cut that required stitches.

Warning, the next image, which shows the stitch job, could be considered graphic.

In January 6’s match-up between the Dallas Stars and the Columbus Blue Jackets, Travis Moen got into a little scuffle with Jared Boll (pictured above). This wonderfully timed image got us thinking, what are some of our favorite fights of all time. For better or for worse, the art of brawling is dying: so lets recognize the controversial times when the NHL was truly a bloodsport. So without further ado, here are uSports’ top 5 best NHL brawls.

5) Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Islanders, 2011

A personal favorite, the New York Islanders in 2011 were on their way to missing the playoffs for a fifth straight season. However, the Penguins rivalry still remained as heated as ever, even if it started to become one sided in New York’s losing years. Now, further add a controversial hit on the Isle’s Blake Comeau from Max Talbot, a 6-0 New York lead and an already hated back-up Penguins goalie and you have the number five best brawl.

4) Philadelphia Flyers and Ottawa Senators, 2004

As the opening text shows, there was 419 penalty minute given out in this 2004 game and the Flyers accounted for 213 of them: which is still a single game NHL record. Now, all of this penalty time was not given out over one brawl, but five separate ones. As the video shows, it all started when two enforcers, Rob Ray and Donald Brashear, got into a fight in front of the net: but once the fight is stopped due to Ray’s cut, other Senators jump Brashear, resulting in a full scale brawl with one fantastic goalie fight.

3) Detroit Red Wings and Colorado Avalanche, 1997

What started out with a few chippy hits resulted in full-blown anarchy, as the two teams who despised each other quickly squared off: in the late 90s the Red Wings and Avalanche were basically looking for any reason to fight one another. And the one thing you have to understand, we at uSports rate these brawls on entertainment, absurdity level and goalie fights. And though the previous one had a great duel, the absolute slugfest between goaltenders Patrick Roy and Mike Vernon makes this one to remember.

2) Philadelphia Flyers and Montreal Canadiens, 1987

In a scene that looks ripped from Slap Shot, the Canadiens and Flyers got in an all out brawl before the game even started. The legend goes that two Montreal players attempted to shot on the opposing net as a pre-game ritual. Well, the Broad Street Bullies took an exception to that: particularly, number 17 Ed “Boxcar” Hospodar. What started as a one on one fight quickly escalated as the locker rooms cleared. In the end, this lengthy brawl delayed the game, as it took a while to hand out penalties and ejections.

1) New York Rangers and Boston Bruins, 1979

What is perhaps the most infamous fight in NHL history, a scuffle at the end of the game between the Rangers and Bruins resulted in some fan participation. As it appears a Rangers fan reached over the boards and cut Stan Jonathan with a rolled up newspaper. In retaliation Terry O’Reilly jumped over the glass and started to pummel the fan as nearly the entire Bruins team joined: perhaps the most memorable part is Mike Milbury, who is now known for his 90s failures with the Islanders organization, beating a fan with his own shoe. You simply cannot make this stuff up: the outcome “three players being suspended, lawsuits and the installation of higher glass in the arena.”
