Nationals’ Anthony Rendon Offered Extension Deal Worth Between $210 Million And $215 Million

Just ahead of the upcoming MLB postseason, the Washington Nationals offered star third baseman Anthony Rendon a seven-year extension deal worth between $210 million and $215 million.

Though this is a sizable offer, it is not expected as of now to keep Rendon out of the free-agent pool, as the slugger only agreed to a one-year deal worth $18.8 million before this season.

Rendon has been on fire for the Nationals during the 2019 campaign, posting a .319 batting average complimented by 34 home runs and 126 RBIs. These numbers are all career-bests for the 29-year-old, who is in his seventh year in the big leagues.

“His season was outstanding,” Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo said Monday. “He’s a consummate professional. He’s as low-maintenance a superstar as there is in the game, one of the best players that nobody knows about, and he’s a true credit to the scouting and player development staffs here in Washington that drafted him, signed him, developed him and watched him turn into a superstar.”

Rendon’s agent Scott Boras will be brokering the deal. Boras is also the agent for Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper, who turned down a ten-year deal from the Nationals worth $300 million after last season. Boras also represents Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg, who signed an extension with the team back in 2016.

Recently, Rendon has been tight-lipped about indicating where he could end up for the 2020 season and if he is inclined to stay in Washington. However, he hinted earlier in the season at his intention to at least see what the free-agent market has to offer.

“I mean, if you’re giving me the opportunity and saying I’m this close from going to go car shopping from multiple lots, instead of staying in one lot, I mean, what would you do?” Rendon said in a radio interview on Grant and Danny on 106.7 the Fan in July.

Regardless of where he ends up next season, Rendon will look to lead the Nationals to a World Series title. On Tuesday, Washington hosts the NL Wild-Card game against the Milwaukee Brewers.
