Former Packers Coach Mike McCarthy Berates High School Referees After Stepson’s Basketball Game

Three referees in Wisconsin have filed a formal complaint against former Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy after he was involved in an incident during his stepson’s high school basketball game on Tuesday.

Ex-Packers Coach Mike McCarthy Blasts High School Refs

During his stepson’s basketball game, the referees made a call that not only McCarthy disagreed with but also happened to make him enraged. As seen on video after the game was over, McCarthy was so angry he followed the referees outside of the gym and started antagonizing them. After his dismissal from the Packers with four games left in their regular season, this certainly is an odd turn for the coach.

“This parent chose to follow the officials and berate them, which is clearly unacceptable,” Janel Batten, Pulaski’s athletic director, said of the incident. “Some things were said, some language was used that we don’t want in our gym, unsportsmanlike language.” The athletic director talked to news to further inform them on the situation. He said he’s never witnessed a parent behave like that during a game.

Norte Dame Athletic Director Steph Mathu said that the parent in the video had already reached out to the school to apologize for the incident and stated, ” we appreciate his outreach.”

The complaint was submitted Wednesday to the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association.

Will McCarthy ever be forgiven for this incident? It certainly doesn’t nearly seem like the worst thing a former NFL coach has ever done. McCarthy said recently that the only way he would return to the NFL for the 2019 season is if received an offer to become the New York Jets’ head coach.
