After Americans Suffer Quarterfinal Exit In U-20 World Cup, What’s Next For Team’s Stars?
Uruguay was the toughest opponent the Unites States have faced in the U-20 FIFA World Cup so far and it showed, as their only two goals let up lead to their quarterfinal loss to send them packing back home. Even though the U.S. team ultimately was not on the same level as Uruguay, it was an impressive streak nonetheless for the Americans, as the only goals let up in their first four matches were in this game.
The U.S. Under-20 Men’s Youth National Team fell short but had one of its best-ever performances and is still the only nation to reach the quarterfinals of the last four tournaments.
The South Americans were dominant, however, despite the Luciano Rodriguez suspension, and got through the American defense twice in this match in Santiago del Estero, Argentina, where this cup is taking place. Uruguay’s Anderson Duarte breached the mighty American defense first to put them ahead 21 minutes in.
Half-time adjustments were made by Unites States head coach Mickey Varas but ultimately, the introduction of Kevin Paredes for Owen Wolff didn’t amount to anything. This then was followed by a defensive effort from Joshua Wynder that accidentally led to their own goal to make it 2-0 56 minutes in.

Not having Paxten Aaronson hurt the American team, as the key attacker and midfielder had his own club commitment in the German Cup for club Eintracht Frankfurt and wasn’t released in time to be eligible for the American roster. But players like Cade Cowell, Elijah Wynder and Daniel Edelman had their moment to shine in the cup, along with a defense that was one of the lone bright spots of this team.
Although it is over, the futures of the members of this squad are far from it. Spots on the Gold Cup for the senior national team will be open and upcoming, along with the 2024 Olympics right around the corner.
