DeWanna Bonner Hints At Possible Retirement After WNBA Finals Loss
WNBA legend DeWanna Bonner is uncertain about her future in the league after the Atlanta Dream lost the WNBA Finals in Game 7.
Bonner called the deep finals run “life-changing” in an emotional Instagram post.
“17 years in this league, and to still experience this kind of love, energy, and excitement is something I’ll never take for granted. This move to Atlanta was life-changing, far beyond winning or losing a championship! The happiness and joy that came with this city/team was unmatched!”
She hasn’t won a WNBA Championship in over 10 years, but claimed two earlier in her career in 2009 and 2014 with the Phoenix Mercury. Her love for Atlanta and the Dream grew quickly, as she didn’t sign with the team this year until the Mercury were eliminated from playoff contention, and she appeared in only five regular-season games.

Bonner also thanked her team and the fans before she talked about her future, which she left very vague. The statement read, “And as for what’s next? Just remember, if you didn’t hear it from me, you haven’t heard it yet,” at the end of the post.
Bonner is now an unrestricted free agent, so whether she returns to Atlanta, signs with the Mercury to finish her career where she’s spent most of it, or retires is still up in the air.
If she does retire, Bonner would likely pass Sue Bird for the most WNBA games played of all time. She currently sits three games behind.
Fans and players have praised her ability to play at such a high level at 39, and many believe she can still be an asset to a team with title aspirations.
