Tyson Fury Defeats Tom Shwarz To Retain Lineal Heavyweight Title

Lineal heavy weight champ Tyson Fury (27-0-1, 19 KO’s) will face Deontay Wilder in 2020 after defeating German fighter Tom Shwarz on Saturday.

Fury had been set as a high favorite poised to add his 28th career victory this weekend, while Shwarz was hoping to give the boxing world its next upset victory, perhaps following up as a worthy sequel to Andy Ruiz‘s inspiring triumph earlier this month.

With the odds stacked against him, Shwarz (24-0, 16 KO’s) lost the challenge to Fury, as he continues to beam with high confidence despite never facing an opponent with a skill set close to Fury’s. Shwarz commented on his mindset as he stated, “This is what I’ve been working for since I was a kid. A fight in Las Vegas against Tyson Fury is a dream come true. While I appreciate Tyson as a great fighter and a sportsman, I am young, ambitious and in the top of the world rankings. I’ve won 24 fights. I’ve got nothing to lose, and my 25th victory will come against Fury.”

Shwarz’s undefeated mark drew him the attention necessary to gift him this opportunity to contend against Fury. While fighting in Germany, Shwarz posted a 41–9–3 record as an amateur before turning pro.

Fury utterly dwarfed his opponent, as the 6-foot-9, 260–pound champ towers over Shwarz, who measures in at 6-foot-5, 241 pounds. Despite Fury’s frame encapsulating Shwarz, the latter’s youth showed during the later rounds. Shwarz also possesses a mental x–factor, as his far less luxurious life in comparison to his already well–off opponent gives him further motivation. Shwarz had made no effort before the fight to downplay this concept as he stated, “If I win, I have another life.”

Despite Shwarz’s noticeable abilities, the odds had illustrated Fury’s likelihood to emerge victorious, posting Fury at -2000. Fury’s ability to move like a featherweight yet still slug with massive force that often outmatches all who oppose him certainly highlighted his impressive skill set, while his 85–inch reach also caused trouble. Shwarz’s only real chance to challenge the “gypsy king” did not prove to be as successful as he hoped, unfortunately.
