Red Sox’ Marco Hernandez Hits Walk-Off Single In Momentum-Boosting 6-5 Win Over White Sox [VIDEO]

The defending champion Boston Red Sox are in desperate need of a solid summer in order to be playoff contenders. They started the week well with a 6-5 win over the Chicago White Sox Monday night and will be looking to continue that run of form throughout the week.

In a close game that saw Marco Hernandez hit a walk-off single in the ninth inning with the bases loaded, the Red Sox rushed Hernandez to celebrate a much-needed win.

“When I hit the ball, I don’t see it. I’m just trying to make a play,” Hernandez said, according to Boston.com. “I had a chance to run and I run hard.”

For the White Sox, it was a tough loss for a team who is in dire need of wins during their stretch of games against multiple playoff contenders. This string of games has been anything but easy, facing the likes of the New York Yankees, followed by the Chicago Cubs, the Texas Rangers who nabbed two games off them, and the current World Series holders. After this series, the White Sox are set to host the Minnesota Twins, who are first place in the AL Central and have the second-best record in the MLB.

The All-Star candidate Lucas Giolito holds himself to a high standard, taking the majority of the blame in the White Sox’ loss.

‘‘For me, just an unacceptable performance,’’ Giolito said, according to the Chicago Sun. ‘‘I need to be able to bear down there at the end of my outing and get through it. Just not making competitive pitches when I need to, 3-2 counts. They got the bat to the ball a few times. I was pitching in traffic a lot, so, yeah, it was one of those games.’’

Despite blaming himself, he allowed just six hits and three runs, racking up seven strikeouts.

‘‘You have to be a good self-evaluator, and you have to hold yourself accountable for mistakes that you make,’’ said Giolito, according to the Chicago Sun. ‘‘It’s just part of our team. We’re going to stay on each other. We’re going to stay on ourselves, most importantly, and learn from our mistakes and come back the next day.’’

The White Sox are 36-40 after Monday night’s loss, setting them at third in the AL Central, 13.5 games behind the Twins. The series continues this week for a 7:10 p.m. EST start time on Tuesday, followed by a 1:05 p.m. EST start on Wednesday.
