Mayweather To Fight Andre Berto In “Final Bout”

After beating Pacquiao, it seems “Money” is out to make more money. Floyd Mayweather Jr., the current welterweight champion, is set to fight in his next title defense against Andre Berto at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on September 12.

The fight was confirmed earlier this week for the WBC and WBA, all of which, will be aired on Showtime pay per view. Also, in a not quite surprising, and probably not true statement, Mayweather said that this will be his “final bout.” Many boxers before him retired before picking up their gloves again for another match.

When asked about the fight, Mayweather said,

“I’m ready to get back in the ring on September 12 and prove again to the whole world why I’m ‘The Best Ever. I always bring my A-game and this fight against Andre Berto is no exception. He’s a young, strong fighter who is hungry to take down the best. Forty-eight have tried before and on September 12 I’m going to make it 49.”

His opponent, Berto, represented Haiti in the 2004 Olympics and was a former welterweight champion. At 31 years of age with an impressive 30-3 record, 23 of which were knockouts, he expects to bring a different fight to Mayweather – a feat which has not been accomplished by 48 other fighters. If anything, he has conditioning on his side, as he is coming off of a March 13 fight against Josesito Lopez, who he beat in the sixth round.

And Berto is not shy about his plans about the fight. During the fight reveal, he said that, “I’m coming to kick Floyd’s a– on September 12.”Okay, but who hasn’t said that? Even Rhonda Rousey took a jab at the champ. “Best believe that I plan to bring it to Floyd and I’m not concerned about what 48 other fighters have been unable to do. Somebody is getting knocked out and it won’t be me. You don’t want to miss this,” concluded Berto.

Mayweather’s last fight was the famed “Fight of the Century” against the legendary Manny Pacquiao. After winning $250 million for the fight, Mayweather became 48-0 with 26 knockouts.

I’m not biased or anything, but here’s hoping that Berto wins.
