The wife of Andrew Smith, former Butler Bulldogs basketball player, posted a heartbreaking note on Sunday regarding her husband’s cancer, stating that he is very close to death:

I can’t wrap my head around the fact that there is nothing left to do for Andrew except tell him how much I love him, hold his hand and be with him for every second we have left together. The doctors tell me death is imminent and that Andrew is going to die from this disease. There are no treatments, no clinical trials…there is nothing left to do. I struggle to grasp what they’ve told me and I spend my nights crying and moaning in pain as I think about losing the one I hold most dear and close to my heart- my husband.

Smith, 25, played for the Butler Bulldogs, who advanced to the final four in 2010 and 2011. He was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in January 2014. He married his longtime girlfriend Samantha shortly after graduating from Butler University with a degree in finance. His college coach, Brad Stevens, skipped a Boston Celtics game last week to visit him.

According to a previous post on the same website Samantha uploaded the above post, Smith’s cancer went into remission but returned in the middle of 2015, in August. Smith has been in and out of the hospital, but was able to attend Butler’s 74-68 victory over the Purdue Boilermakers on Dec. 19.
