Seeing and perhaps meeting just one game-defying icon in person often makes anyone’s day, let alone two. Those present at the PGA Memorial Tournament’s Pro–Am experienced just that, as five-time MVP quarterback Peyton Manning and 15 time major–winning champion Tiger Woods hit the links together Wednesday morning for the second year in a row.

Although the golf course remains 43-year-old Woods’s habitat, jerseys with the number 18 stitched in stuck out in a crowd normally populated with typical golf polos or quarter–zips. Fans quickly approached 43-year-old Manning, often pleading for autographs and pictures between holes, which Manning did his best to acknowledge.

Manning shot well, yet modestly joked about his game as he stated, “There were a lot of people out here. I only hit one guy, I think. He said if I got him a couple of Super Bowl tickets he’d call it even. Hit some good shots.” Nearly every time Manning teed off, his signature call while under center “Omaha” roared throughout the crowd, often causing a smile to crack Manning’s face. With Woods leading the way as the number five-ranked golfer, the group stood at just two shots under par through eight holes.

Although Manning’s competitive nature is similar to Woods’s, their scores and actual play stands as a secondary act, positioned behind the simple spectacle of seeing two athletes who both for a time stood as the best their sport had to offer coming together. Not too often does an opportunity for two figures so influential yet talented arise. While the Happy Gilmore and Bob Barker pairing remains an honorable mention, this combination containing Woods and Manning stands unopposed as far as dynamic duos on the golf course go.
