Yankees Mock Indians On Instagram After ALDS Game 5 Win

The New York Yankees earned a 5-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians in Game 5 of the AL Division Series at Progressive Field on Wednesday night, and couldn’t help but rub more salt into their opponent’s wounds.

After trailing the playoff series, 2-0, the Bombers won 3-2 to advance to the AL Championship Series against the Astros, which begins on Friday in Houston.

“Final: Yankees 5, The Team That Blew A 2-0 Series Lead 2,” the Yankees’ Instagram account posted following the victory as a caption of a photo of a grinning CC Sabathia.

The Yankees then specifically took aim at Indians second baseman Jose Ramirez on Twitter:

“We like cupcakes. And champagne,” they wrote, quote tweeting a Jose Ramirez post from earlier in the week about the Indians recording a 3-0 record at Yankee Stadium during the regular season.

“We’re 3-0 at Yankee Stadium this year cupcake,” was what Ramirez wrote.

The Tribe, meanwhile, thanked fans on Twitter for a “memorable season.”

The Yankees replied by saying: “In all seriousness, congrats to you guys on an amazing season. It was a hard fought battle to the end! Until we meet again…”

Yankees third baseman Todd Frazier said the team’s victory on Wednesday was dedicated to manager Joe Girardi.

“This one is for Joe,” Frazier said of Girardi. “He got a lot of criticism after that second game, and we talked a lot, me and him. I couldn’t be happier for him. I couldn’t be happier for him.”

Frazier was referring to New York’s Game 2 loss on Friday. In that game, Girardi failed to challenge an on-field ruling that Indians outfielder Lonnie Chisenhall was hit by a pitch with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Replay showed that the ball hit off the knob of Chisenhall’s bat on the 0-2 pitch. It should have been strike three to end the inning. Instead, Chisenhall went to first and loaded the bases for Francisco Lindor, who hit a grand slam off Yankees reliever Chad Green to bring Cleveland within one.

“The difference between [Game 2] and today is about as big as you can get. I don’t know at any point in my career that I felt worse than I did on Friday,” Girardi said. “As I expressed many times, it’s the hurt for the other people that is so hard for me. So the emotions, I mean, these guys had my back and they fought and fought. And again, they beat a really, really good team.”
