WNBA Unable To Verify ‘Hateful Fan Comments’ Toward Reese During Investigation

The WNBA announced that it could not verify the source of “hateful fan comments” made toward Angel Reese during the game between the Indiana Fever and the Chicago Sky in Indianapolis earlier this month.

The league had been investigating fan behavior following an incident during the game in which Caitlin Clark fouled Reese in the third quarter.

“We have investigated the report of racist fan behavior in the vicinity of the court during the May 17, 2025, Chicago Sky at Indiana Fever game,” the league said in a statement. “Based on information gathered to date, including from relevant fans, team and arena staff, as well as audio and video review of the game, we have not substantiated it.”

Directly following the incident, Reese kept her opinion short, dismissing Clark’s actions.

“Basketball play,” Reese said. “Refs got it right. Move on.”

Reese was recently asked for her opinion about the investigation before the Sky’s game against the Phoenix Mercury on May 27. Reese mostly brushed off these questions.

The Sky are 0-4, one of just two winless teams in the WNBA. After being an All-Star during her rookie season, Reese has had a slow start in 2025. She’s averaging ten points and 14 rebounds on 31% shooting.

The Sky released a statement following the league’s conclusion of the investigation.

“This process demonstrates the league’s strong stance on stopping hate at all WNBA games and events and we will continue to support those efforts,” the team said.
