Miami's Rueben Bain (Image: Miami)
Miami edge rusher Rueben Bain was identified as the driver in a 2024 deadly crash in Florida.
Bain was driving two teammates, Wesley Bissainthe and Nyjalik Kelly, and a guest, Destiny Betts, in March 2024. Bain struck another vehicle, causing the car to crash into a concrete barrier.
Betts was left in a coma from the accident. She died in June 2024.
The police initially reported that Bain was driving in an irresponsible manner, which caused the crash. However, further investigations determined that irresponsible driving didn’t cause the crash. This caused the case to be buried until it was reported on by The Read Optional on April 12, 2026.

The Read Optional interviewed the Betts family, who made a joint statement to the publication.
“While the loss remains incredibly painful for our family, we have worked hard to find peace and move forward. At this time, we are not seeking public attention surrounding this tragedy and respectfully request that our family’s privacy be honored. We also wish Mr. Bain the best as he continues his life and career,” the family said.
According to CBS Sports, most teams interested in drafting Bain have already spoken with him about the accident. Most of the teams considered Bain’s answer about the accident to be satisfactory, and that this is a settled matter.
Bain was the ACC Defensive Player of the Year in 2025. He is widely expected to be a first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Many draft experts expect him to be drafted by the New Orleans Saints. The Saints ranked No. 16 in defense last season. One of the Saints’ biggest weaknesses was their ability to put pressure on the quarterback. They ranked in the bottom five in quarterback knockdown percentage. Bain had 9.5 sacks with Miami last season.
