Wayne Gretzky Sets Record As Rookie Card Sells For $1.3 Million

The “Great One” continues to set records even in retirement.

A 1979 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky rookie card has sold for a record $1.3 million. This makes it the most expensive hockey card to have been sold and the only hockey card to sell for over $1 million.

Gretzky is widely considered to be the greatest NHL player of all time, nicknamed the “Great One.” Gretzky began his career in 1979 for the Edmonton Oilers where he won eight consecutive MVP and a total record of nine MVP awards, which still remains a record. Together with the Oilers, he won the Stanley Cup four times. The Hall of Famer earned multiple additional awards and played for other teams like the Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues

In his 20-year playing career, he set 61 NHL records and still holds 60 NHL records to this day. He has 40 regular-season records, 15 playoff records and six all-star records.

In just 1,487 games played, he has the most points, goals and assists in a season and all-time. He has an all-time record of 2,857 total points, which include 894 goals and 1,963 assists. The second-place Jaromír Jágr only has 1,921 total points with 766 goals and 1,115 assists. Gretzky’s records are still hard to beat and are unlikely to be beaten anytime soon.
