University of Houston star DT Ed Oliver argues with head coach over a coat during their 48 – 17 win over Tulane.
Ed Oliver is a star defensive tackle for the Houston Cougar (8-3) and a top NFL Draft prospect. He sat out his fourth straight game on Thursday night (knee injury) and got into a heated argument with Cougars head coach Major Applewhite on the sideline.
Oliver is projected to be a top five pick in next year’s draft, but in addition to his knee injury, this recent confrontation could dramatically affect his draft stock.
After being named a consensus all-American as a sophomore in 2017, Oliver announced that he planned to depart for the NFL after his junior season. However, he succumbed to a knee injury during the Cougars 49 – 36 win against the Navy Midshipmen (2-8) on Oct. 20.

Oliver hasn’t played since the injury. During Thursday night’s game against the Tulane Green Waves (5-6), the cameras caught him getting into a sideline argument with Applewhite over a coat, of all things.
Just before halftime, Applewhite told Oliver to remove a heavy team coat that was apparently reserved for active players. Oliver took off the coat, but refused to let the argument rest. As the team began to head into the locker room, Oliver had a few more words for his coach. The end result was Oliver being restrained by Rod Grace, the team’s director of sports performance.
Oliver did not return for the second half, and did not speak with reporters after the game.
Applewhite addresses the sideline incident at a press conference following the game, and tried to play down the debacle.
Tim Tebow took to the show First Take to express his concerns with how Applewhite handled the sideline debacle with Oliver.
