Bad news for the Minnesota Timberwolves as superstar guard Anthony Edwards is set to miss up to two months with a knee injury.

Edwards tweaked his knee in the home opener against the Toronto Raptors and had been dealing with knee problems since last season. He was shown grabbing at his knee in pain and discomfort. He was listed as questionable and called day-to-day before an MRI showed worse damage than he originally thought, even though he was cleared to play on Monday, played 41 minutes and scored 47 points.

“They get to Miami in the season opener, and he’s playing and playing well, but from what I’m told at some point in that game, there was a tweak of some sort that happened with his right knee. They got new imaging with an MRI, and it revealed a worse situation than had been examined this last summer in July,” said Athletic senior writer Jon Krawczynski.

Edwards missed 21 games last season, around a fourth of the season. None of his missed time proved costly, as he played most of the playoffs.

This year is a different story, and could be quite costly.

Edwards needs to reach the 65-game threshold this year to be eligible for a $304 million supermax contract extension if he finishes as All-NBA.

The focus for the Timberwolves and Edwards, who will not struggle to make a nice chunk regardless, will still be winning a championship. They won’t rush him back if he’s not ready.

The role becomes larger for LaMelo Ball, who will need to step up in Edwards’ absence. In Edwards’ 21 missed games last season, the team went 12-9 and held up their end of the bargain, and the challenge resurfaces for the team’s 2026-2027 campaign.
