MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - DECEMBER 15: Playing Captain Tiger Woods and the United States team celebrate with the cup after they defeated the International team 16-14 during Sunday Singles matches on day four of the 2019 Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne Golf Course on December 15, 2019 in Melbourne, Australia.
Although Tiger Woods’ horrifying car accident that nearly took his own life was a mere two months ago, he’s already being potentially recruited for the Ryder cup in September, as an assistant. Captain Steve Stricker said on Wednesday that he’s approached Woods regarding this role. “I’ve talked to [Woods]. I don’t know if we are there yet to commit to him being there,” Stricker said, per ESPN’s Bob Harig. “He’s still got a lot going on, and his spirits are great, though, as of late. We were on a Zoom call with him just last week, and he seems like he’s in a better place. He’s still got some ways to go.”
Woods is at home, still recovering from the horrible accident in February, but he’s making excellent progress, and quickly. Woods suffered multiple fractures to his right leg as well as foot and ankle injuries in the single-vehicle crash. A next step is on the horizon, according to George Savaricas of the Golf Channel. “Have a Tiger Woods injury update, hearing TW at the point in the healing process where the next benchmark is for blood circulation to get back to normal in his injured right foot. Once this happens recovery timelines will fall into place, currently in ‘wait and see’ mode,” he tweeted on Monday morning.
Woods has experience in the assistant’s role, especially with Stricker. The two worked together in the 2017 president cup. The other assistants as of now, are Davis Love III, Zach Johnson and Jim Furyk. The event will be held at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin as the U.S. team eyes just its second Ryder Cup title since 2010.
