After North Carolina Fires Hubert Davis, Will They Stick WIth An Alumnus?

North Carolina fired their head coach, Hubert Davis, this week.

This comes after being defeated by TCU in the first round of the March Madness tournament. Davis was fired after five seasons with North Carolina.

In his first season as head coach, North Carolina advanced to the championship game. However, they only won two playoff games in the other four seasons.

North Carolina has had an alumnus as its head basketball coach since 1961. Davis played four seasons at North Carolina. He averaged 21 points per game in his senior season and graduated with a degree in criminal justice. Davis was drafted by the New York Knicks with the No. 20 overall pick in the 1992 NBA Draft and went on to have a 12-year NBA career.

If North Carolina wants to pick another alumnus to lead its team, they have lots of options to choose from. Former point guard Raymond Felton could be an option. He publicly called for Davis to be fired on the Nightcap podcast. He is currently the head coach of the Felton Elite AAU Program.

Felton played three seasons at North Carolina. In his junior season, he led the nation with 6.9 assists per game. He also helped North Carolina win the national championship. Felton was drafted with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Bobcats.

If they want to play it safe and hire someone on the current staff, Sean May could be a strong option. May was also part of the 2005 championship team. May has been an assistant coach for North Carolina since 2021. Davis was also previously an assistant coach before being promoted to head coach.

Regardless of who the school hires, they will look to return the winning tradition to Michael Jordan’s alma mater.
