With Randal Grichuk Making Yankees’ Roster, Jasson Dominguez & Oswaldo Cabrera Are Relegated To Minors

Randal Grichuk has made the Opening Day roster for the New York Yankees.

This will be the seventh team that Grichuk has played for in his 13-year career. Last season, he played 113 games between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Kansas City Royals.

Grichuk didn’t have an impressive spring training, had a .125 batting average, .192 on-base percentage and a .292 slugging percentage. Despite this, Grichuk provides veteran experience and won’t complain about limited playing time.

Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham will start the majority of games in the outfield for the Yankees. Jasson Dominguez was originally expected to make the Opening Day roster. He had a .347 batting average, .389 on-base percentage and a .673 slugging percentage in spring training.

Despite this, the Yankees decided that daily minor-league reps were better for improving his defense.

Oswaldo Cabrera was also a candidate to make the Yankees’ Opening Day roster. However, he is still recovering from a fractured left ankle he suffered in May 2025.

The Yankees originally signed Grichuk as a spring training invitee. However, they traded Jorbit Vivas to the Washington Nationals to make room for Grichuk on the 40-man roster.

Grichuk had a -0.8 WAR last season. However, Grichuk has historically hit well against the Yankees. He has 18 home runs in 68 career games against the Yankees. The Yankees hope that hitting in a stadium he’s historically hit well in can revive his career.

Grichuk has worn No. 15 with his previous teams. However, the Yankees retired number 15 for Thurman Munson. Grichuk has chosen to wear No. 34 instead. This could be because he’s 34 years old, but he hasn’t officially said why. He wore No. 24 in Little League, but Dominguez is currently wearing that number.

The Yankees dominated the San Francisco Giants with a 7-0 win on Opening Day.
