Tarik Skubal remains the face of the Detroit Tigers’ future. Few pitchers in Major League Baseball have established themselves as dominantly as Skubal. Despite a challenging season for Detroit, he continues to show why he’s among the best aces in the game.
He entered the 2026 season coming off back-to-back American League Cy Young Awards and enormous expectations. The Tigers named him their Opening Day starter for a third consecutive season, a reflection of the confidence the organization has in its franchise pitcher.
The 29-year-old has once again performed at an elite level when healthy. Before a brief stint on the injured list following an elbow procedure, he posted a 2.70 ERA with 45 strikeouts in seven starts, while maintaining one of the best strikeout-to-walk ratios in baseball.
After returning from injury earlier this month, he resumed his role atop Detroit’s rotation. Although his first start back resulted in a loss to the Cleveland Guardians, the Tigers were encouraged simply to see him healthy and back on the mound.
As the trade deadline approaches, Skubal has become one of the most talked-about names in baseball. With Detroit falling behind in the American League playoff race, speculation has grown regarding whether the Tigers could move their ace before he reaches free agency. Teams such as the Dodgers, Cubs and Blue Jays have reportedly shown interest.
Those teams could certainly use him, but Skubal has addressed the rumors by urging the Tigers to start winning games. He made it clear that the team controls its own destiny, emphasized improved performance and expressed hope that Detroit can remain competitive. “Play better baseball,” he said.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the roster, Skubal remains focused on helping the Tigers succeed. Since debuting in 2020, he has developed from a promising prospect into one of the best pitchers in baseball.
