The uniforms are meant to pay homage to the Super Bowl XIII championship team from 1978. Steelers wideout JuJu Smith-Schuster showed off the new jersey for a small group of fans at Heinz Field on Wednesday. Multiple players from the 1978 championship team were present, including John Banaszak and Franco Harris.

“We felt it was time to throw it back to the 1970s and the great teams we had,” Steelers president Art Rooney II explained.

The block numbers are the biggest difference between the throwbacks and the current Steelers jerseys.

The team will first don the new jerseys on October 28, when they host the Cleveland Browns.

SBNation noted how the Steelers’ new jerseys are reminiscent of the Iowa Hawkeyes’ uniforms.
