Redskins To Honor 1987 Replacement Players With Super Bowl Rings

The Washington Redskins are set to honor replacement players from their 1987 team in a big way.

The team — which just this week declined to franchise-tag quarterback Kirk Cousins — announced Wednesday evening that it will award these players Super Bowl XII rings. Washington went 11-4 that season and won its second Super Bowl championship after routing the Denver Broncos 42-10.

A midseason strike by the Players Association shortened the 1987 season by one week, and replacement players came in and also played three games. Those players wanted to change the way free agency worked, and they decided a lockout was the best way to convey this message. The strike ended up lasting 24 days before the two sides finally reached a compromise.

The Redskins’ replacement players won the three games they played in 1987, although the team released most of them after the strike ended.

In September, ESPN premiered its “30 for 30” documentary series “Year of the Scab,” which told the story of the replacement players.
