Philadelphia Flyers Unveil New Mascot ‘Gritty,’ Fans Go Wild On Twitter

On Monday night, the Philadelphia Flyers unveiled their new mascot, Gritty. He’s named after the term used to describe athletes who aren’t flashy or very talented. His mascot backstory is that he’s a subterranean entity that emerged from the bowels of the Wells Fargo Center, where the Flyers play, and he feasts on hot dogs.

While making his debut during a preseason game, he slipped on the ice and then asked on Twitter: “Why didn’t anybody tell me the ice is this slippery?”

Fans have been vocal about Gritty. Twitter was filled with memes mocking how funny the 7-foot fuzzy creature looks and comparing him to ZZ top and the Muppets.

The cross-state rival Pittsburgh Penguins tweeted, “lol ok” — to which Gritty responded, “Sleep with one eye open tonight, bird.”

Fox 29 reporter tweeted a photo of a GoFundMe page trying to raise money to euthanize Gritty.

Philadelphia Police responded to Gritty with just a GIF of Forrest Gump running.

Gritty ended the night with one last tweet.
