Pete Carroll revealed Monday that the Seattle Seahawks are including Colin Kaepernick and Robert Griffin III in their options for backup quarterbacks.

Pete Carroll Says Seahawks Considering Colin Kaepernick, RGIII for backup QB

The Seahawks coach announced during an appearance on 710 ESPN Seattle’s “Brock and Salk” show that the team is seeking to add competition behind Russell Wilson. When asked if Kaepernick and RGIII were among the passers the team was considering, Carroll said his squad is contemplating all options.

“We’re looking at everybody. We really are,” Carroll said. “We’ve been tracking everything that’s going on, and we’ve got cap and roster issues and stuff like that that we’re still trying to manage properly. But quite frankly, yes, we are looking at all those guys.”

Griffin hasn’t been in the news much since he was released by Cleveland earlier this offseason, while Kaepernick, who previously served as backup QB for the San Francisco 49ers, has also become a free agent and has been shunned by nearly every NFL team for doing things like protesting the national anthem by kneeling before games. Multiple Seahawks players, including Doug Baldwin, Michael Bennett, Cliff Avril and Jeremy Lane supported Kaepernick’s flag and anthem protest and even launched their own rebukes to take a stand against racial injustice and oppression of minorities.

In 12 games last season, Kaepernick completed 59.2 percent of his passes and threw 16 touchdowns with four interceptions.

Wilson has yet to miss a start in his NFL career, although he sustained three different injuries in 2016. Trevone Boykin, who signed with Seattle as an undrafted free agent in 2016, served as Wilson’s backup last year and was expected to do this again next season.

However, Boykin was arrested on misdemeanor charges of marijuana possession and public intoxication in March. He was then arrested for potentially violating his probation due to the same incident.

In the 49ers’ Week 17 finale against the Seahawks last season, Kapernick went 17-for-22 for 215 yards and a touchdown.

Last week, Kaepernick’s adviser claimed that three teams were interested in the quarterback, although Kapernick’s girlfriend Nessa said on Twitter that she had doubts about the adviser’s allegations because she said the former 49ers star would have known about the teams’ interest.

Griffin had a terrible season with the Browns, who finished 1-15. The QB played only five games and recorded two touchdown passes and three interceptions.
