Tickets for March’s NCAA Tournament East Regional section are on sale now. Sixteen teams will compete in the first round of the East Regional from March 29-31. In 2019, Michigan state emerged from the East to make the final four before losing to Texas Tech 61-51.

Looking at past history only three of the last 18 tournament winners were not ranked in the preseason AP Top 25. Those three teams included Syracuse in 2003, Florida in 2005 and UConn in 2010. All of them were number three seeds in the tournament before going on to win the National Championship.

if you’re looking to bet on a winner prior to the opening round keep in mind that 15 of the last 18 champions have made the tournament the previous season. The only two teams to win the national championship without consecutive March Madness appearances include the same 2003 Syracuse team and UConn in 2014.

Looking at coaching statistics in the NCAA tournament, 83% of the last 18 champions have coaches that have been to the final four prior to winning it.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski is currently the leader in this category with 12 final four appearances and five national championships (1991, 1992, 2001, 2010, 2015). North Carolina’s Roy Williams has five final four appearances and three national championships. Michigan State coach Tom Izzo has ten final four appearances and three title wins.

The only coaches to win a national title in their first final four appearance include Bill Self for Kansas in 2008, Kevin Ollie for UConn in 2014 and Tony Bennett at Virginia in 2019.

• 5 of the past 18 national champions (28%) have been ranked in the top 5
