Mike Trout To Undergo Thumb Surgery, Will Miss 6-8 Weeks

Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout will undergo surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb, and will in turn miss about six to eight weeks, MRI’s reveal.

What was originally a sprain when Trout left Sunday’s game has now resulted in a tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his thumb, which will cause the 25-year-old to miss extended time. It will be the first time he has landed on the disabled list in his seven-year career.

The reigning AL MVP could have opted against the surgery and stayed on the 7-day disabled list, but will opt to have the procedure on Wednesday.

Trout has been on a tear of late, and his having one of his best years as a pro. Sitting near the top of the American League with 16 home runs and 36 RBI’s, he also hitting .337/.461/.742, leading the league in the latter two categories of on base percentage and slugging percentage. Trout also leads the league in total walks drawn, with 36.

It will be a long road to recovery, as no one should expect to see Trout in uniform again until after the All-Star break. He still does lead the voting race however, and is expected to still be a lead MVP candidate despite the injury.
