Mets Prospect Amed Rosario Writes Open Letter To Fans Before MLB Debut

Amed Rosario has a special message for New York Mets fans who have been eagerly anticipating his major league debut.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson announced on Monday that the team would be promoting the Dominican shortstop from the Triple-A Pacific Coast League, where Rosario has hit an astounding .328/.367/466 with seven homers, 58 RBIs, 19 doubles and seven triples in 425 plate appearances and 94 games.

“He’s so close it’s a surprise he hasn’t been up before this,” said one NL scout who saw Rosario this season. “He will add some speed and has better range than they have at shortstop right now. He needs to be a little more selective at the plate, but he’ll get that when he gets up there.

“He’ll be ready.”

Rosario, 21, will make his MLB debut in the Mets’ game against the Rockies in Colorado on Tuesday, the opener of a three-game series that begins at 8:40 pm EST.

The shortstop penned his message to Mets fans on Twitter early Tuesday morning.

“Dear Mets fans,” Rosario wrote. “We’ve grown and made it together! To God be ALL the glory. I’m grateful to share this moment with ALL of you, specially #Mets fans who have showered me with support. Things won’t always be perfect but expect me to give you ALL of me, each and every day. Lets create long lasting memories in our CITI.

“The kid from Los Mameyes,

Amed”

Alderson stated the Mets had always planned to call up Rosario after Monday’s trade deadline, despite fans’ demands that the prospect be promoted sooner.

“We wanted to get through the deadline and try to resolve some of the positional issues that he had,” said Alderson. “I think the flexibility that our existing infielders possess allows us to move some pieces around. It was a combination of just getting through the hullabaloo of the trade deadline and then at the same time allowing some of our other players to get more familiar with some of the other positions.”

The GM added that although Rosario won’t play every game from now on, but that as long as he plays shortstop, Jose Reyes and Neil Walker will divide second base duties. However, Walker will also occasionally play first base as needed. Asdrubal Cabrera will keep playing at third and assist at second as needed.

Alderson also said rookie pitcher Chris Flexen, who replaced injured right-hander Zack Wheeler last week, will “get another start or two.”

The Mets (48-55, 3rd in National League East) are 14.5 games behind first-place Washington for the NL East lead.
