Lakers Add Collin Sexton In Major Backcourt Upgrade

The Los Angeles Lakers add Collin Sexton in a major backcourt upgrade. The Lakers continue their aggressive offseason by signing the veteran guard, adding depth and a proven scorer alongside Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves. The move gives the Lakers one of the deepest teams in the NBA as they continue to reshape the roster.

Sexton agreed to a two-year, $19 million deal. At 27, he was one of the more sought-after players on the market for backcourt depth. Known for his speed and relentless motor, Sexton has developed a reputation as a valuable bench player—someone you want on your team, especially when you need energy or a spark.

For the Lakers, this fills a major need. With the team now centered around Dončić following LeBron James‘ departure in free agency, adding another scorer who can fit alongside Dončić and Reaves is crucial. Sexton is expected to excel in bench minutes and provide an offensive spark.

Team officials reportedly believe Sexton will thrive playing alongside Dončić, who creates passing angles for players like him. The Lakers have also addressed other roster needs, signing Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz to strengthen their center position and adding Quentin Grimes for additional depth.

Sexton also gives head coach JJ Redick flexibility—depending on matchups, Redick can use him as a shooting guard or as an instant-offense sixth man leading the second unit. Sexton’s versatility will be tested as he joins one of the NBA’s premier franchises, where expectations are always high.
