Kyrie Irving Splits With Agent Jeff Wechsler, Signs With Roc Nation Sports To Fuel Rumors Of Joining Nets
The Kyrie Irving to the Brooklyn Nets rumor may be more than just hearsay at this point.
The 27-year-old, six-time All-Star has reportedly decided to split ways with his longtime agent, Jeff Wechsler, in favor of signing with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Sports. With Irving declining his player option on Wednesday with the Boston Celtics in favor of testing unrestricted free agency, this only adds fuel to the fire that Irving is leaning towards signing with the Nets.
Over the last several months of the NBA season, rumors began to pile up about Irving teaming up with Kevin Durant this summer on the New York Knicks. With Durant tearing his Achilles tendon during Game 5 of the NBA Finals, Irving may now be considering signing with a team on his own without Durant alongside him.
SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2019- IN MEMORIAM SLIDESHOW
Over the last few weeks, the Irving-to-the-Nets rumors has been quickly heating up. Irving’s move to fire Wechsler, who has been Irving’s agent since being selected as the first overall pick of the 2011 NBA Draft out of Duke University by the Cleveland Cavaliers, only adds fuel to that rumor’s fire. Keep in mind that Roc Nation Sports, Irving’s new representative agency, is owned by rapper Jay-Z, a former minority owner of the Nets. Jay-Z was forced to give up his minority ownership in the Nets after founding Roc Nation Sports in 2013, but the Brooklyn native’s ties to the organization still very much remain. This move by Irving seems like the perfect stepping stone to him winding up in Brooklyn this summer.
In the eight years that Wechsler has represented Irving, Irving has landed several national marketing opportunities. From “Uncle Drew” commercials, to an Uncle Drew movie, and even a sponsorship with the headphone company, Skullcandy. Wechsler also helped Irving get out of Cleveland in 2017 and onto the Celtics.
