Kevin Love and Lebron James
After opting out of his contract last week, Kevin Love was going to test free agency. However, rumors allegedly point to the fact that Love truly meant what he said during the season: he wants to remain in Cleveland and win a championship with LeBron James and Kyrie Irving.
Now, this is still unconfirmed, with plenty of teams vying for the talented power forward. The Lakers, Celtics, Knicks and more will be asking for a meeting, but it looks like all of those appointments will ultimately be pointless, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst.
“Though they cannot formally make an offer until Wednesday, sources say that the Cavs, for months, have planned to extend a five-year, maximum contract for Love in excess of $110 million despite his shoulder and back injuries last season,” Windhorst wrote. Furthermore, while he could still speak to other teams, Windhorst stated that sources close to Love believe he will remain a Cavalier.

Again, Love, who was a bit of a controversial figure in Cleveland, has stated that he wanted to remain a Cav. But there have been various incidents — the questioning of him and LeBron’s friendship and James’ cryptic tweet — that suggested otherwise.
Now, if Windhorst’s sources are right, the next question is in what year will Love ask for an opt out clause? Like James, both want a piece of the NBA’s new TV deal, which is set to raise the salary cap tremendously during the 2016-17 season. So if he signs a deal tomorrow, expect an early opt out option to be written into his contract.
Love averaged 16.4 PPG, 2.2 APG and 9.7 RPG, which were all considerably down from the previous season.
