Jurgen Klopp has stated he remains optimistic that midfielder Emre Can will soon sign a contract extension with Liverpool.
The 23-year-old German star will enter the final year of his deal this summer, and has been mulling whether or not to remain with the Reds.
Can scored a fantastic bicycle-kick goal in Monday’s 1-0 victory at Watford.
Klopp has reveled in that goal, as has Can and the rest of Liverpool’s roster, and called it one of the most unbelievable shots he has seen the midfielder take.

“After his bicycle kick probably everyone wants him to stay,” the German manager said. “I think it is no secret how much I like Emre. He likes the club and that is a completely normal situation. We are in talks and there is absolutely no pressure, it is all good. It is two partners with big respect for each other. If we can keep good players that makes sense for development and he is one of these good players. I am quite positive.”
Klopp continued discussing the obsession at Anfield over Can’s brilliant goal from Monday: “He’s watched it on the iPad about 250 times,” said Klopp of the former Bayern Munich star. “The player scores a fantastic goal and we speak about him the week after. The goal was so important and so deserved. He is a hard-working boy, it was never any different. He always had a fantastic attitude which is what I liked most. The plan is to make a more simple goal in the next game. If you can do this it would make sense.”
Can will likely keep his spot on the starting lineup for Sunday’s home game against Southampton, Klopp added. The German boss also said he remains sure that despite Philippe Coutinho’s limp after suffering a leg injury at Watford on Monday, the 24-year-old Brazilian midfielder will be ready to play on Sunday.
“Yesterday was the first time for Phil running – he ran a bit like (goalkeeping coach) John Achterberg! Good news,” said Klopp. “We cannot be 100% sure but at this moment it looks rather positive.”
Liverpool are third in the Premier League with 69 points, behind only Chelsea and Tottenham. Southampton are ninth with 41 points.
