United States striker Folarin Balogun has been cleared to play in the Round of 16 after FIFA suspended the automatic one-match ban imposed on him, marking a dramatic reversal in one of the biggest controversies of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The decision came days after President Donald Trump acknowledged asking FIFA President Gianni Infantino to review the controversial red card that had initially ruled Balogun out of the match against Belgium.
Balogun was shown a straight red card during the United States’ victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina after a VAR review determined he had committed serious foul play by stepping on an opponent’s ankle. The decision immediately generated debate throughout the football world, with many former players, analysts and supporters arguing the contact appeared accidental and did not warrant a sending-off. The dismissal automatically triggered a one-match suspension under FIFA’s World Cup regulations.
In a surprising development, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee announced that the suspension would instead be placed on a one-year probationary period under Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. The ruling allows Balogun to participate against Belgium while maintaining the sanction should he commit another similar infringement during the probationary period. The decision represents one of the rare instances in World Cup history in which an automatic suspension has been suspended after being issued.
The decision also brought renewed attention to Trump’s involvement. According to multiple reports, Trump contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino after the Bosnia and Herzegovina match, seeking clarification on the decision and requesting that the governing body review Balogun’s suspension. After FIFA announced its ruling, Trump publicly thanked the organization, calling the reversal “the right” outcome. FIFA, however, has maintained that the disciplinary committee reached its decision independently under its existing regulations.

The reversal has reignited debate over consistency in officiating and disciplinary decisions during the tournament. Critics have pointed to a similar challenge involving Argentina captain Lionel Messi during the group stage that did not result in a red card, arguing that comparable incidents have produced different outcomes. While referees evaluate each challenge independently and VAR decisions are based on the specific circumstances of each incident, the differing rulings have fueled discussion about whether disciplinary standards have been applied consistently throughout the World Cup.
Belgium’s football federation also questioned FIFA’s interpretation of its own regulations, arguing that the decision conflicts with the automatic suspension provisions outlined in the World Cup competition rules. The federation indicated it was examining its options following the announcement, adding another layer of controversy ahead of the Round of 16 matchup. The ruling has drawn reactions across the international football community, with supporters and analysts divided between those who believe the original red card was excessive and those who view the reversal as an unprecedented departure from tournament precedent.
For the United States, the decision represents a significant boost as the team prepares to face Belgium. Balogun has been one of the Americans’ most dangerous attacking players throughout the tournament, and his availability preserves one of the team’s primary goal-scoring threats. Beyond its immediate impact on the knockout rounds, however, the episode is likely to remain one of the defining controversies of the 2026 World Cup, raising broader questions about VAR, disciplinary consistency and the balance between established tournament regulations and discretionary review.
