Ex-Raiders DE Aldon Smith Takes Plea Deal In Domestic Violence Case, Pleads No Contest To Two Charges

Former San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders defensive end Aldon Smith pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor charges Monday as part of a plea deal with San Francisco prosecutors to settle his domestic violence case from earlier this year.

Aldon Smith strikes plea agreement

Smith was initially charged with domestic violence, assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, false imprisonment and vandalism.

Smith was looking at several years in jail but on Monday, the 29-year-old struck a deal with prosecutors in which he pled no contest to two counts.

In exchange, he was sentenced instead to 90 days in county jail, but he got credit for time served for the days he had already spent in jail and also for his stint in a live-in alcohol treatment facility.

During the hearing, the judge allowed the victim to read a statement out loud in the courtroom, in which Smith’s ex said, “I may never be the same” but also wished him luck in staying sober.

Smith was arraigned in April on three charges of violating a protective order, which stemmed from a March 3 incident with his fiancée in which he was accused of beating her and biting her on her wrists. He turned himself in on March 23 but failed to make his court appearance.

Smith was selected by San Francisco with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft and signed with Oakland in 2015 following his release from the 49ers. He was then cut by the Raiders in March after details of his domestic violence incident emerged.

Smith had several run-ins with the law throughout his career. He has been arrested on DUI charges multiple times and has previously faced weapons charges that were later reduced.

In reaction to his numerous brushes with the law and the league’s substance abuse policy, the NFL suspended Smith for a year on Nov. 17, 2015 and has yet to reinstate him.
