Drew Brees Expected To Miss Six Weeks With Thumb Surgery After Injury In Saints’ 27-9 Loss To Rams [VIDEO]

The New Orleans Saints‘ 27-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams at the Coliseum on Monday was, surprisingly, not the worst loss of the day for the visitors, who dropped to 1-1 on the year.

The Saints were undoubtedly seeking revenge for last year’s infamous NFC Championship Game. However, in the first quarter, those thoughts were quickly replaced with worries over losing their All-Pro starting quarterback and consummate leader: Drew Brees.

Aaron Donald, a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, broke through the offensive line and smacked the right hand of Brees as he went to throw. Unfortunately for the Saints, this one play resulted in Brees being relegated to the sidelines for the rest of the game and donning a baseball cap, as he found himself unable to grip a football.

The wrap on Brees’ hand during the game seemed to suggest that this injury had the potential to be serious in the long-term, and Brees confirmed the potential severity of the injury in his post-game statement: “This felt like something a bit more significant that prevented me from gripping the ball.”

During the game, trainers were seen working on the area near the UCL of Brees’ thumb. Now, several reports from around the NFL are saying the veteran quarterback could miss up to six weeks due to thumb surgery.

Saints coach Sean Payton was curt with reporters in his post-game press conference.

“It was a thumb and right away when he attempted to throw, he was having pain with it,” said Payton. The coach promised further updates to come on the situation.

Should Brees truly be down for the long-haul, it seems as though the likely replacement would be Teddy Bridgewater, a first-round draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings back in 2014. On the other hand — should Brees’ thumb indeed require surgery — the Saints remain confident with a quarterback at the helm who was a Pro-Bowler himself back in 2015.

The Saints organization and its fans are hoping their future Hall-of-Fame quarterback can make a swift recovery and lead the team out onto the field next week. However, even if he cannot grip the football, do not count out the New Orleans Saints.
