Dan Quinn Expected to be Atlanta Falcons Next Coach

After the Denver Broncos’ uninspired hiring of Gary Kubiak, only the Atlanta Falcons remain as the sole team who has not filled their vacant head coach spot. But according to Jay Glazer, it is not going to be empty for much longer, with Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn likely taking the coveted spot.

Dan Quinn’s defense has been the foundation for two Super Bowl trips, including last year’s 43-8 win over the Denver Broncos. And it is truly amazing what he has done with the Seahawks group: in both years as DC, Seattle has been the number one total defense: they were particularly astounding in 2013, leading the league in points allowed, yards allowed and takeaways — first team to do so since the ’86 Chicago Bears.

The only cause of concern for Atlanta Falcons fans is that Quinn, who has seen success on the collegiate and professional levels, has never been a head coach. At the same time, he is walking into a fantastic position with the Falcons, where the offense barely needs any major changes: a collection of Matt RyanJulio Jones and a fantastic tandem of skilled running backs is hard to complain about. The only thing the Falcons need is a defense, which ranked dead last in 2014 and in the bottom five in 2013.

Yes, he is going to need to do a lot of work with the pitiful Falcons defense, but it is still fixable. At the moment, Quinn is still the Seahawks’ defensive coordinator entering Super Bowl XLIX against the New England Patriots: but according to Glazer, there is believed to be a handshake agreement between the Falcons and the coach — Quinn is unable to sign anything until after the Seahawks’ post season run, which win or lose will end on Feb. 1.
