Texas State Senator Royce West has filed a lawsuit between $100,000 and $200,000 against Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant after the player allegedly caused at least $60,000 in damages to West’s DeSoto, Texas, rental home.
According to court papers filed last week, Bryant rented the 6,400-square-foot home from September 2013 to January 2016, but when he returned the property to West in February, it was “littered with trash and feces, missing blinds and shutters, with cracked windows and blackened carpeting.”
The lawsuit continued by saying that Bryant, 27, was unwilling to accept responsibility for the damages and that West is suing for both $61,546.77 in damages and for loss of ability to rent the property while repairs are being made.
Bryant didn’t directly respond to the lawsuit, but took to Twitter to say the following:

According to the Dallas Morning News, which first reported the lawsuit, Bryant was paying $4,720 a month to rent the house. The Morning News contacted Bryant’s agent, Kim Miale, who declined comment. West, according to the DMN, is a member of a support group of prominent citizens established to mentor Bryant, a 27-year old who is coming off a career-worst season.
West is also an attorney who previously defended Bryant in a domestic violence case involving the 2014 All-Pro’s mother. Bryant allegedly hit his mother Angela in the face with a ball cap in 2012. Bryant agreed to a year of anger management classes.
Having played just nine games last season due to injuries, Bryant caught 31 passes for 401 yards in 2015, breaking a string of two straight Pro Bowl seasons.
West’s lawsuit also stated Bryant didn’t show up for a walk-through to detail the damages.
“The walk-through revealed irreparable damage to carpeting, flooring, window, shutters, and blinds; and distinct and pervasive odors throughout,” the lawsuit said.
West also represented Bryant in 2011 when the young receiver, a year after getting drafted by the Cowboys late in the first round, faced a pair of lawsuits seeking nearly $1 million over unpaid jewelry bills.
Bryant has remained out of legal trouble since the incident with his mother.
The seventh-year pro had his best season in 2014, with 1,320 yards receiving and an NFL-leading 16 touchdowns to help the Cowboys win the NFC East and reach the divisional round of the playoffs before a loss to Green Bay.
