Cowboy’s Dak Prescott Set For $27 Million Payday, Jones Says He ‘Doesn’t Get Hand Cramps Writing Checks’

Dak Prescott has had quite the impressive season thus far, leaving some to say he is the only reason the Dallas Cowboys, who sit 6-5, are even still in the fight. Sitting one game above the .500 mark, serious inconsistencies have surfaced including receiver drops to poor situational play-calling, down to a defense that struggles to get off the field, and a special teams that is quite arguably the worst in the league. The level Prescott plays is so high, that his situational awareness and leadership are keeping this football team afloat.

Contract talks have loomed for a while now between the star quarterback and Cowboy’s leadership. Owner Jerry Jones has fought for Prescott to get his hand on a pen and that pen onto paper, but Prescott chose to let the market do some work for him. And that it did. Russell Wilson, Carson Wentz and Jared Goff all signed mega-deals, giving Prescott exactly what he was looking for. The payday will come, but the debate lies with whether or not it will be a multi-year extension or a 2020 franchise tag put on the 26-year old star. This tag is projected to be around $26.7 million, something that would be well worth Prescott’s interest.

The former Mississippi State Bulldog was drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 draft. Brought on as a back-up, he made his start after Tony Romo suffered a preseason injury. He was named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and earned himself a Pro-Bowl selection. His 2019 start has proved lucrative for the Cowboys as Prescott has 3,433 yards so far, with 21 touchdowns and a QBR of 100.8.

Jones and the Cowboys leadership have big decisions to make, but ultimately Prescott holds the cards. The young talent will look for a well earned payday and the likelihood of one is great. When asked, Jones said, “I’m not known as the guy that gets hand cramps when I’m writing checks, but I want to win games.” And with Prescott, they’ll do just that.
