LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - DECEMBER 14: UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman (L) punches Colby Covington in their welterweight title fight during UFC 245 at T-Mobile Arena on December 14, 2019 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Usman retained his title with a fifth-round TKO.
UFC #2 Welterweight Contender and resident troll Colby Covington went after NBA players on Twitter for boycotting their games in the name of social justice.
Everybody in the UFC community, except for Joe Rogan, has dismissed Covington since his championship fight against Kamaru Usman back in December where Usman poetically broke Covington’s jaw in the third round and won by knockout in the fifth. While Covington likes to be a troll and play a heel, the UFC is the only major sports organization where behavior like this goes unchecked. They know the audience needs a bad guy. UFC President Dana White spoke at the RNC last week, so the organization clearly won’t have a problem with the politics.
It’s a bad look for the UFC but better for business. Covington has his first fight since December in September against former Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley. While Covington is an objectively terrible guy, people will likely tune in to see him get beat up. If it’s good for business, that is all the UFC cares about.
