Cardinals’ Yadier Molina Out At Least Four Weeks, Will Have Surgery After Taking Ball To Crotch
The St. Louis Cardinals catcher will have surgery for a traumatic hematoma, a swelling of blood clots within the tissues. The fastball that him was reportedly thrown at 102 mph. To replace the Puerto Rican, prospect Carson Kelly was called up from Triple-A Memphis. Francisco Pena will also serve as catcher for the Cardinals in the meantime.

According to MLB, 35-year-old Molina is hitting .272/.292/.456 with six homers and 17 RBIs in 120 at-bats in 2018.
The Cardinals (20-12, first in NL Central) also defeated the Cubs 4-3 on Sunday to win all three games in the series. St. Louis next hosts Minnesota on Monday at 8:10pm EST for the opener of a two-game series.
Here are some fan reactions to Molina’s injury:
As a former catcher, taking a foul tip in the nuggets is less than ideal. Let alone a foul tip off a pitch that’s coming in at 102. How Yadi could walk off on his own power is unbelievable.

“yadier molina” Even if I am not a big fan of this guy… I unfortunately know what he has to go through and I don’t wish that on my worst enemy.

Last year Yadi’s season ends after suffering a concussion on consecutive foul balls off the bat of Kris Bryant. This year he’s out a month after surgery following a foul ball off the cup by …Kris Bryant. Moral: don’t pitch to Kris Bryant.
