Bears QB Brian Hoyer Breaks Left Arm In 26-10 Loss To Aaron Rodgers, Packers

Chicago Bears quarterback Brian Hoyer suffered a broken left arm during the second quarter of Thursday night’s 26-10 road loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Hoyer was seen clutching his left arm after he was hit by Julius Peppers. He headed to the locker room, and third-stringer Matt Barkley took over at quarterback shortly afterwards, given that Jay Cutler is already out with a right thumb injury.

Aaron Rodgers threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns and Davante Adams and Ty Montgomery emerged as playmakers in the second half. The Packers earned their third victory in four straight home games.

Rodgers was 39 of 56, setting a franchise record for completions in a game in Green Bay’s first game without injured running back Eddie Lacy.

“Both teams were stressed from a medical standpoint,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said post-game. “We did what we needed to do tonight. A lot of production on offense. Our offensive line played big.”

The Packers (4-2) advanced effectively on short gains most of the night, but were unable to break into the end zone until Adams caught the first of his two touchdown passes with 9:11 remaining in the third quarter for a 13-10 lead.

Rodgers and Adams connected again for a 4-yard score on the first play of the fourth quarter for a 10-point lead.

Meanwhile, a Bears offense that was already 31st in the NFL in scoring only became worse. Barkley finished 6 of 15 for 81 yards and two interceptions.

Barkley engineered a 54-yard drive on his first possession of the game, which ended in a 39-yard field goal from Connor Barth.

Furthermore, head coach John Fox attempted to rely on the rush against the league’s third-best run defense, and this also failed.

Kadeem Carey recorded 48 yards on 10 carries, including a 24-yarder. Receiver Alshon Jeffery only managed 33 catches against a Packers secondary that was missing its top three cornerbacks due to injuries.

Chicago did so terribly that Rodgers had more completions (37) than the Bears had offensive plays (36) by 5:31 of the fourth quarter. The Bears (1-6) have now slipped to their worst season start since 2000.

Rodgers’ last completion was a 2-yard touchdown pass to Randall Cobb for a 16-point lead.

Adams, Montgomery and Cobb each finished with at least 10 catches.

The Bears will next host the Minnesota Vikings on Monday, Oct. 31, while the Packers will visit the Atlanta Falcons on Oct. 30.
