Atlanta United Beats Mexican Team Club America 3-2 To Win Campeones Cup [VIDEO]

Atlanta United defeated Mexican team Club America 3-2 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Wednesday to win the second annual Campeones Cup.

The Campeones Cup, founded last year, is a North American soccer competition between the previous year’s Major League Soccer champions and the Mexican league’s Campeon de Campeones winners. Canada also participates in the Campeones Cup. Last season, Mexican club Tigres beat Toronto to win the tournament, which means Atlanta is the first MLS team to beat a Mexican side in the competition.

IN MEMORIAM: SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2019 TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

Renato Ibarra and Roger Martinez scored for Club America in the 13th and 57th minute, respectively. Martinez set Ibarra up for the team’s first goal — which evened the game at 1 — after beating defender Franco Escobar down the left flank and tapping a soft pass into the penalty box. Martinez’s goal came off a corner kick after beating Atlanta United’s German midfielder Julian Gressel. Atlanta United defender Flo Pogba, Manchester United star Paul Pogbas Guinean older brother, nearly managed to clear the ball out with a header but just missed it.

America’s Bruno Valdez received a red card in the 72nd minute after a late tackle on Martinez for the matchup’s only ejection.

Atlanta United is next set to host the U.S. Open Cup on Aug. 27 and is also seeking to defend its MLS title this year. On Sunday, the Five Stripes will play at Portland.
