Leicester City secured a 2-0 EFL Cup third-round victory over Liverpool at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday thanks to second-half goals from Shinji Okazaki and Islam Slimani.

Japanese substitute Okazaki, 31, filled in for injured Leonardo Ulloa. Okazaki picked up a loose ball inside the penalty box to open the scoring in the 65th minute.

Algerian forward Slimani doubled the lead in the 78th with a powerful left-footed strike past goalkeeper Danny Ward to earn his third goal in the competition this season.

Liverpool thus remain winless in September. Jurgen Klopp’s team will face Leicester — the 2016 Premier League champions — at the same venue in a Premier League game on Saturday.

Klopp made eight changes to the Reds’ starting lineup from Saturday’s 1-1 tie with Burnley, although Philippe Coutinho retained his spot as a starter. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain made his debut as a starter with Liverpool after transferring from Arsenal — where he spent six years — at the deadline on Aug. 31. The 24-year-old midfielder signed a five-year contract with Liverpool.

Goalkeeper Ben Hamer — one of seven changes for Leicester — was called into action to keep out low shots from Coutinho and Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Leicester managed only one attempt on goal in the first half — a weak shot from  Demarai Gray that dribbled straight to Ward.

Coutinho did not appear after the break as he was replaced by teenager Ben Woodburn. The visitors struggled without their star Brazilian midfielder.

Ulloa left the field early in the second half due to a head injury.

Liverpool finished with 21 shots on goal and 70 percent possession, but Klopp said he was disgusted with his team’s play.

“That we concede like this, that makes me really, really sick,” said Klopp. “You cannot play football and do that. The story of this game is really easy to tell: we were the much better team in the first half, we played good football, we didn’t score, that’s sometimes part of football.”

“But as long as we concede goals like we conceded today, then it is quite difficult.”
