Springtime is right around the corner and with it typically comes flowers, as well as the re-emergence of certain types of animal species.

Bees stop Rockies-Padres spring training game

The Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres got a taste of the latter during a spring training game in Peoria, Arizona on Thursday when a horde of bees stormed the infield during the ninth inning of the Rockies’ 10-5 victory.

When the swarm hit, Padres pitcher Trey Wingenter stepped off the mound, and after briefly hesitating, the right-hander dropped to one knee. Colorado batter Daniel Castro rapidly followed the motion, but then the two players, home plate umpire Alex Tosi and everyone else in the infield fell flat on their stomachs. On the broadcast, someone could be heard yelling “Bees! Bees!”

After staying down for a few seconds, the players stood up and fans cheered when they did so.

“I saw something happen over here as all the players got on the ground,” Padres manager Bud Black said. “It was reminiscent of Petco Park a few years ago when a beekeeper had to come down from the left-field corner. That was about a 20-30 minute delay.”
