New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo said he believes that CTE is fake in the Bring the Juice podcast.

The podcast is hosted by former Fresno State wide receiver Frank Dalena. Dalena frequently interviews college and NFL players.

Dalena asked Skattebo if he believed CTE was a legitimate threat. Skattebo responded that he believes it’s an excuse.

Skattebo received criticism online for his take, with fans saying he was downplaying a legitimate problem. He then apologized on social media.

“I recently did an interview and had a lapse in judgment, which resulted in me making a tasteless joke about CTE and asthma,” Skattebo said. “It was never my intention to downplay the seriousness of head injuries or asthma. I sincerely apologize to anyone that was offended by my remarks, and I assure you that I’ll be more mindful and respectful going forward.”

CTE is caused by repetitive head trauma, leading to the buildup of an abnormal protein called tau. This can cause cognitive decline, memory loss, confusion, impaired judgment, impulse control problems, aggression, depression and anxiety. Many of these symptoms are associated with general aging and other diseases. The only way that CTE can be formally diagnosed is with a deep brain examination that can only be performed after death.

One of the most notable cases of CTE was in former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez. Hernandez was serving a life sentence in prison for murder. Hernandez died by suicide in prison. During the autopsy, it was revealed that Hernandez had stage-three CTE, the most severe case found in someone in their 20s.

Skattebo is known for taking hard hits without bracing for impact, which can increase the risk of CTE. Skattebo had season-ending surgery on his right ankle after the Giants’ Week 8 game. He is expected to be ready for training camp in July.
