Although most MLB hitters smile when noticing an upcoming series against the long–ball-offering Baltimore Orioles, nobody enjoys stepping into the box against them to the extent that Yankees shortstop Gleyber Torres does.
After homering twice during the series’ first game, the second–year infielder gave another two baseballs the ride of their lives, launching a third inning 424–foot and a fifth inning 337–foot home run into orbit. Torres’s remarkably growing home run count against Baltimore now tallies at ten, all of which Torres has hit in just 11 outings against his team’s AL East rival.
Fueled by Torres and his home run barrage, the Yankees now sit atop their division, standing as an incredible accomplishment thus far, as star players such as Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Didi Gregorious and Luis Severino remain buried under sunflower seeds in the Yankee dugout as their injuries continue to keep them off the diamond. Although Torres’s ridiculous tear against Baltimore rolls on, the 22-year-old Venezuelan ballplayer strives to remain humble as he stated, “I know a lot of things about how I hit very well in this series in Baltimore. But I don’t think about that too much. I try to respect, first of all, respect the game, be humble, respect the team and just play.”

While Torres gives Yankee fans reasons to cheer night after night, he only highlights the issues Baltimore possesses that keep their team from adding to their win column. The Orioles pitching staff highlights the team’s shortcomings, as they appear to be hosting a home run flash sale. Baltimore has given up five or more home runs seven times during this year’s campaign, the most in American League history. This number looms even larger when taking into account that Baltimore only sits 49 games deep into this young season.
Despite Torres’s modest comments regarding his home run totals, the numbers themselves illustrate his dominance. With seven more games slated against the Orioles this season, Torres only requires three more home runs to break the record for the most home runs hit against Baltimore by one player. Even if Torres fails to continue this onslaught into the season’s second half, just a fraction of his current productiveness could not only break, but shatter the record currently shared by Lou Gehrig, Hank Greenberg and Gus Zernial, all of which are names that demand respect within the pro baseball universe. Baltimore will catch a break however, as Torres has been given the day off for today’s game, most definitely generating a sigh of relief from the home pitching staff.
