With LaMelo Ball Trade, Can Timberwolves Be A Championship Contender?
LaMelo Ball was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves this morning in a blockbuster NBA move. The Timberwolves made one of the biggest trades of the NBA offseason, acquiring star guard Ball from the Charlotte Hornets to bolster their efforts to build a championship-caliber team around Anthony Edwards.
The Timberwolves acquired Ball and guard Josh Green, while Charlotte received forward Naz Reid, an unprotected 2033 first-round pick, three first-round pick swaps (2028, 2029 and 2030) and three second-round picks. The trade marks the end of Ball’s six-year tenure in Charlotte and signals Minnesota’s commitment to building a title contender.
Minnesota had reportedly pursued Ball for months. After falling short in the Western Conference to the San Antonio Spurs in six games, the Timberwolves searched for another elite playmaker to complement Edwards. Team officials believe adding a dynamic point guard would relieve some pressure from Edwards.
Ball, the 2020-21 Rookie of the Year and a former All-Star, brings elite passing, scoring and creativity. He and Edwards were in the same draft class in 2020—Edwards went No. 1, Ball went No. 3. Although injuries have been part of Ball’s career, he is coming off one of his healthiest seasons, appearing in 72 games and averaging more than 20 points.
This move followed the trade that sent Julius Randle from the Timberwolves to the Brooklyn Nets, creating additional financial flexibility that helped pave the way for Ball’s arrival.
The pairing immediately gives the Timberwolves one of the most exciting backcourts in the league. Ball’s vision and playmaking should create easier scoring opportunities for teammates, while Edwards remains one of the NBA’s premier scorers and rising superstars.
Both will be must-watch as the 2026-27 season approaches, with expectations in Minnesota higher than ever. The Timberwolves have made their biggest move yet in pursuit of an NBA championship, betting that Ball could be the missing piece in their quest for the franchise’s first title.
