Luis Guillorme is the New York Mets‘ 17th-ranked prospect. He has been playing with the team during Spring Training, and is seeking to impress the Mets in any way he can.

Mets Prospect Luis Guillorme Catches Bat With One Hand

On Thursday, the 22-year-old second baseman/shortstop awed in an unexpected way. In the second inning of the Mets’ Spring Training game against the Miami Marlins, Adeiny Hechavarria missed the ball swinging at a pitch from Robert Gsellman and lost control of his bat, which went soaring toward the Mets’ dugout. As most of his teammates attempted to dodge the bat, Guillorme nonchalantly caught the bat by the barrel, drawing applause from the crowd.

MLB.com’s scouting report credits Guillorme with having “the fastest hands in the system,” and clearly this is visible both on and off the field.

“I just literally saw the bat coming at me and caught it,” Guillorme shrugged. “Didn’t think much of it.”

But Guillorme does, apparently, have a habit of staying in the line of fire when bats and balls come flying his way.

“Usually when stuff like that happens, I really don’t get out of the way,” he said. “I saw it the whole way. I threw my hand at it. The bat just happened to land on it.”

When the youngster arrived back at the clubhouse following the game, an attendant told him his cellphone had not stopped buzzing since he made the great catch. Sure enough, Guillorme quickly took his phone and noticed he had received around 150 Instagram notifications and 45 text messages.

Guillorme’s teammate, Brandon Nimmo, was among the Mets who ducked for cover as the bat began flying toward the dugout.

“I was like, ‘What in the world?'” Nimmo said. “I was waiting for it to hit near me, or by me. And I turned around and Guillorme just has it in his hand. I was like, ‘Did you catch it?’ Then I ran right in here to watch the replay. It was nice! He didn’t even flinch.”
