Barcelona and AC Milan have both won the most UEFA Super Cup titles: each team has won the tournament five times. Liverpool and Real Madrid follow with three trophies each, and inaugural winners Ajax of the Netherlands have won twice, although their first victory was unofficial.
United’s only Super Cup title came in 1991 against Red Star Belgrade.
On Tuesday, the Red Devils will be missing two players due to suspension: Eric Bailly and Phil Jones will both skip the game after violating UEFA’s anti-doping regulations and/or displaying violent language toward game officials following their Europa League victory. United are planning to appeal the punishments.
New United signings Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof could make their debut on Tuesday and play alongside David de Gea, Anthony Martial, Henrik Mkhitaryan, Ander Herrera, Antonio Valencia, Paul Pogba, Chris Smalling and Daley Blind to form the starting 11 for Mourinho’s squad.
Cristiano Ronaldo is set to play for Real Madrid in Tuesday’s Super Cup game, after returning to the team’s training on Saturday. The 32-year-old Portuguese forward played for his national team in the Confederations Cup earlier this summer, and recently appeared in Spanish court to defend himself against charges of £13 million ($17 million) in tax evasion, but has not been deemed guilty thus far. Ronaldo could be sentenced to up to two years in prison but is unlikely to actually serve jail time for tax fraud should he be found guilty due to Spanish laws involving non-violent crimes committed by first-time offenders.
Here are the potential starting 11 for Real Madrid on Tuesday: Keylor Navas; Sergio Ramos, Theo Hernandez, Nacho, Dani Carvajal; Casemiro, Toni Kroos, Luca Modric, Christian Bale, Karim Benzema and Ronaldo.
Long-term absentees Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo and Ashley Young are not going to participate in the Super Cup as the trio continue rehabilitation work for their respective injuries.
