After Warriors Sign Guard Brandon Williams, Where Does It Leave The Team?

The Warriors have signed former Mavericks guard Brandon Williams to a one-year $2.6 million contract.

The Warriors continue to add more depth after drafting Michigan forward Yaxel Lendomborg. After failing to sign big names like LeBron James in the offseason, the Warriors are finding themselves in the middle between a rebuild and keeping their core for another season.

According to Spotrac, the Warriors had $249.4 million allocated toward the 2026-27 salary cap before signing Williams. This will now put them at about $252 million. They are now about $2.6 million below the second apron threshold.

Williams is now entering his fifth NBA season. Before landing with the Mavericks, he played with the Portland Trail Blazers and spent time in the NBA G League. 

In Dec. 2023, Williams signed a two-way deal with the Mavericks. He has played 116 games over three seasons. Last season, Williams had a breakout year, playing in 66 games with the team.

Despite finishing with a 26-56 record last season, one of the few bright spots besides Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg was Williams. He averaged 13 points, 3.9 assists, and 2.9 rebounds over 22.2 minutes per game.

Earlier in August, NBA insider Marc Stein reported that the Warriors were interested in Williams and forward Georges Niang for their remaining open roster spots. Now that the Warriors have acquired a player they have been eyeing, they hope to build on last season and aim for a playoff spot this season.
